Would you buy car without v5
« on: April 28, 2013, 08:15:29 pm »
Hey guys
Buying car, DVLA taking time with sending v5 to owner after plate transfer. Paid deposit, car parked at current owners house. It has been over week now, and v5 still not turned up. Owner took copy of v5 before sending off.
Would wait or drive it away without v5?

Agree.
But what is proof of ownership now?
Written receipt from seller? But what if seller not owner just trader?
I run HPI check on car and it is all clear?

When I was buying my rangie once my ideal one came up, the guy was an idiot to deal with, looked HPI came back ok but with 11 previous owners.... the price was right and it was 8.5 years old but when he started telling me it had no V5 then it was the deal breaker I'd been looking for.  Oh he wanted cash only too.

A V5 isn't proof of ownership but cash isn't exactly proof of a purchase either, I could apply for the V5 the keeper would get a copy of my request.  Report the car stolen and then that's me screwed.  I think your circumstances are slightly different though.  I'd advise signed receipts and a traceable transaction though to protect yourself.

Personally I would wait for the v5 but I'm just naturally cautious

When you do a plate transfer you send the paperwork to your local DVLA to register it and then they send the request to DVLA Swansea to issue the new V5. This seems to slow the process down a bit and, as said above, can mean it takes a few weeks. Has the current owner received the paperwork back from the DVLA local office telling them of the new registration number/new tax disc yet? If so then you are half way through the process and it shouldn't be long before the new V5 turns up.

Ive seen plenty on eBay saying 'No V5 just waiting on getting it from DVLA . will write you a full receipt' - in that case why not wait until the V5 is back before putting the ad online? It sounds really dodgy to me , I wouldnt be handing thousands of quid over to someone on the back of a scraggy paper receipt.

If he took a copy of the V5, has ID to prove he is the name on the V5 and has the document back from the DVLA to display the old registration on the car again, then it all sounds above board. I've traded cars on before with dealers and made them wait for the V5 after transferring my cherished plate off it. They still took the car in.

I was looking to buy a car for my dad and faced with same issue. I thought exactly the same as dmac, it souds dodgy...so told the guy selling the car to call me when he gets the V5 and I will happily do a deal....No call and its been about 6 months now!

Also sorry to go a little aside, but can I ask I've been faced with 2 situations where the seller's name wasnt on the V5 and so I walked away, right thing? One was being sold by a nurse in a private hsopital with the name 'British Transport Police' on the V5!! So I walked away and he started texting me that night with numerous offers on the price but I simply wasn't interested...

Depends on who I was buying from. If its a shady looking council estate littered with caravans and 'Daaags' then no, if its someone I think I could trust and did a bit of homework on them then yes.

I sold a car recently with just a photocopy of the V5 due to a reg number transfer, docs came through within 2 weeks and all was good.
