RNS Versions
« on: April 08, 2013, 07:10:44 pm »
Can someone explain the differences between the versions of the rns510 to a complete novice? Which is the latest?  Is a version C classed as out of date?  How do you update the maps?

Sorry for all the questions but any help is well received

Cheers

Andy

Youve got version a b and c. These are the older type units with lcd screens.

The later models have led screens. Possibly more memory on hard drive too I think.

Im not sure what else is different.  But those 2 are the main ones.

I can do map and fw updates. If you're far, I can send them out to you as I do to most people.

I have a RNS 510 version myself mine is the B version basicly the higher the letter the newer the unit.i will give you a good tip don't go any higher than 2760 firmware on this unit,as you will find that the car isn't communicating fully with the unit.Allso on the later units they changed the lcd screen to a led screen. If you go higher than the 2760 which on mine I did I went to a version which at been hacked to uopdate my firmware and I found that the screen was very dull even when adjusting the brightness.I want to change my unit for the latest RNS 510 p version which as dab included.

Revision A and B were, obviously, the first versions and are very similar. Revision C is a little faster and has the LED lit screen (although I think the very first ones didn't). The presence of the star button on the top right hand button rather than the previous symbol was the easy way to differentiate these newer units at the time.

They stayed at Revision C for quite a while but eventually updated to Revision D. I think this is when the newer, bigger, faster hard drive was added. Since then the revisions have increased rapidly. It seems like this is as they have upgraded the radio to be compatible with the latest vehicles however the actually capabilities of the units haven't really changed. The most recent versions now include DAB which is probably the most significant upgrade of recent. I think this was introduced in Revision H, but I'm not certain on that.

All the recent firmware updates seem to be "officially" compatible back to Revision D however I am successfully running the 4120 firmware on my Revision C unit. This firmware version introduced Radio Text which has long been a missing feature from the RNS510 for unknown reasons. The latest firmware in now in the 5000s but this seems not to be compatible with anything but the latest units.

Maps are currently at Version 9. You can purchase the DVD off your VW dealer or if you don't want to pay then they can be "obtained" off the Internet and burn your own DVD, but we don't condon illegal activity here!

To install new firmware or maps you just stick your update DVD into the unit and leave it to do its thing for an hour or so until its finished.

The above Post pretty much sums up the world of RNS 510's perfectly! :happy2: my Version B was stolen out of my car recently I have just replaced it with a version H and there is a huge difference in speed and the screen is amazingly clear,it is definitely worth paying the extra.

A and B models are the most common as for some reason Volkswagen didn't ask VDO Siemens (makers of the RNS510) to upgrade the design for a while. The C was then fairly common and then suddenly there is a jump to F/G/H.

I'd definitely go for the newer model as there will also be other benefits such as newer hard drives and as already mentioned better screens. My Version B for example has a slight red hue to it sometimes when its really cold outside
