Boot struts
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:15:29 am »
Hi guys

I need to replace my gas boot struts as they are knackered and leaking, however VW have quoted me £70 for a pair that seems expensive!

Any suggestions where I can get a pair, are the Skoda ones the same as I've seen mention on here with the boot pop (not too bothered with fitting that to be honest as sounds very hit and miss)  that the Fabian ones fit and are stronger, are they much cheaper and a straight swap?

Would I be ok to buy a set off e-bay as there are some for around £30 - 40?

Just called Skoda, the Fabia struts are just over £18 each so much cheaper than the VW ones, are these an exact fit, presume so if they are part of the boot pop mod a lot are doing on here?

Yes you will be fine with the Skoda struts. The part number is 6Y0 827 550 C :happy2:

EDIT:
Although when I did the boot pop I changed the ball pins so not 100% sure if the struts will fit on that standard golf pins or not. But even if you have to change the pins it will still be cheaper than the VW struts :happy2:

Thanks, do you have the part number for the correct pins?

Yeah the ball pins are 1J6 827 439 A.

And the bump stops are 1K8 827 761 D (you may as well get the boot pop mod done seeing as you are buying the other 2 bits :happy2:) Might be a bit cheaper to get all 3 bits from the GB that was running, http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61346.0.html

carnt you get these direct from a gas strut manufactuer just a thought?  might work out cheaper and there only gas struts at the end of the day im sure they would be used in other applications?
