Play in gear stick ?
« on: April 09, 2013, 10:40:24 pm »
Hey folks,
Over the last day or say I've felt a bit of play in my gear stick ?

Still finds and engages gears nicely and there isnt a vibration or anything. Just feels really "light" to move around the box.

Its only happened yesterday and today, any ideas what it may be ?

Thanks
John

I've got this problem too, just bought a new gear link end with bushing (one part) to see if it solves it, not holding my breath though, feels far too localized to the gear stick for that... Going to have a good look at it soon.

Let me know if you solve it!  :happy2:

About half way down this page mate: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/shifter-adjust-VW-Audi.htm

Looks like we need a special locking tool.  May as well fit the new bushes whilst I'm at it.

You don't need any special tools. Use either a 5 or 6mm drill bit, sorry I can't remember which.

Odd things are afoot !
Got in the car this morning for work and all was fine !
Took it to my local garage anyway and asked them some questions. They seem to think it may be a gear linkage cable starting to become loose.

I've only noticed the issue yesterday and it was a rather warm day...11 ish degrees ! Compared to the 3 degrees it was today.
Today the stick felt like it has done for the 14 months I've owned the car so I'm at a loss to what it may be.

I've been advised to keep an eye on it and see it any particular conditions make it worse.

After actually watching it, it seems straight forward ---- except is it a big job to get the gearbox bell housing / linkage / gear lever out of the car!? lol

You could probably get most of it out with an angle grinder. No need to remove that tricky engine cover then.  :happy2:

Replaced the gear linkage ends this evening, one bushing was quite bad... it's made a bit of difference, but there's still some undesired play whilst in gear.  Will have to take another look when I have more time.
