Air bag cover on eBay too risky?
« on: April 14, 2013, 06:17:24 pm »
I'm looking to replace my steering wheel cover to get rid of my scratched vw badge. As far as I remember u have to buy the whole air bag from vw but I've seen this on eBay genuine brand new cover only http://bit.ly/1311o9r
I asked the guy if its easy to fit on he said its dangerous and needs a pro to fit  is this true or is the guy just covering himself incase I cause my air bag to go off. I took the air bag off today and it seemed to just clip on with big clips all the way round but I don't know if this holds the air bag in place and don't want to damage the air bag. Can someone who knows about this shed some light please

if the airbag goes Bang while you are changing it it could be lethal

however the chances of that happening are low, a few precautions should be noted.

Handle it with care
Ground yourself to discharge any static

So is it possible to change it over without setting off the air bag there is a lot of clips holding it on

I've changed 2x so it is possible

as I said there is a small risk, but that would also apply to a meteorite hitting your house

Take a picture before you take it all apart

Take pics before I take it apart? Is there other stuff needing removed to get it off it looked like it was just clipped around the edge of the air bag

Take a pic so you know how it should look when you put it back together

Did mine yesterday - REALLY easy!! If I can do it anyone can.

As I was advise RESPECT the airbag! I pulled the battery, left for half hour then removed. Took my time, watched what I did and managed to do it all in 20min (Remove, strip down and put back together)

Just lay each part down on the table as you take it appart, real easy
