Fitting H+R 20mm lowering springs.
« on: April 15, 2013, 06:04:31 pm »
I have ordered some 20mm H+R lowering springs today and was wondering if the front camber will need to be adjusted, If so do you have to buy adjustable top mounts to do it or is there any adjustment points as std.  Also am i right in thinking that the rear camber will not change as it is a trailing arm system and doesn't change when the ride height goes up or down.... cheers.

Thanks for the link but... Looks like he had fun.

I am more concerned with the need to adjusting the front camber when the springs are actually fitted ... Can the camber be adjusted on a std car ?

Thanks, so there is enough adjustability in the stock setup to dial out the increased camber from springs.

/\/\/\   I was supposed to fit my springs today but other things came up  :sad1: (friend has a garage with a 2 post lift)  I will have to wait until next Saturday now but I will let you know when we get into it but I have a feeling the camber is not adjustable on a std GTI .... could be wrong though...

A 4 wheel alignment just sets the "toe in" to be straight with the steering wheel and back wheels doesn't it...

The camber increase with lowering springs would be very small. I didnt get mine aligned for months following my springs and ended up with inner tread wear. Got it aligned properly and now the inner wear has disappeared

As your probably aware, front camber isn't adjustable as standard on the GTI. I had H&R springs on my GTI, and after alignment setup my camber was well within tolerance  :happy2:

The lowering springs did put a fair bit of camber on the rear, but fortunately that is adjustable

Thanks for the replies guys, I am just a bit concerned that the extra camber will cause inner tyre ware as I have just had 4 new F1's fitted... I have access to a 4 wheel laser alignment kit and have had that set up.

Kinda confused as people are saying a 4 wheel alignment will stop the ware... so how are they altering the front camber if it's not adjustable... Or are they just setting up the 4 wheel alignment.

Running lots of camber is fine so long as the toe is setup well..... if you run lots of camber and lots of toe then youll go thru tyres very quickly

Yeh maybe I am worrying about nothing as 20 odd mm is not a lot...  I can make sure the 4 wheel alignment is spot on  cant wait to get them fitted and loose the tractor look though, makes the car have a much nicer stance.

Correct... rear camber is adjustable.

I will be very very interested to see what you think to them regarding ride quality vs stock springs.  :popcornsoda:
