What's a car with options really worth?
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:34:45 am »

Recently, I've been thinking of putting my car up for sale and getting something else. The list is massive at the moment, with a used Scirocco or a new Mk7 GTD near the top. Other candidates are from the BMW and Mercedes family and the Jag XF. Anyways, that's another discussion altogether.

My question is, even if the car is a high miler (133k) and a older example (2006)  - what sort of effect does having some nice extra's make to the sale price of the car?

Personally, I'd go that extra mile to find something with a few creature comforts - where's allot of people I know would rather go poverty spec but lower mileage/newer model.

The car's black and comes in 3dr form. Factory tinted windows, 18" diamond cut Monza's, Black leather with arm rest and electric lumbar support, DSG and paddles, MFSW, 6-disc AC, dimming/heated mirrors, auto lights etc, 10 speaker sound system; I will also add some xenon headlamps in the next month or so (just waiting for the better weather!)

The car will generate allot of interest - simply because it's exterior look is, IMO, the best combination out there for the mk5.   Would you say £5,000 would be pushing it - as a starting price?

Vaheed.

Hi,

In my experience on cars of that kind of value, optional extras can make a car easier/quicker to sell, but don't usually result in a higher asking price. I'd say that you'd have to be lucky at £5k, based on there being 05/06 Golf TDIs around for a similar price but with half the miles. Who knows though, with the right buyer!

You will find most people buying from the Trader  will not be fussed by things like Xenon's High line and stuff like that. They will be more interested in age/mileage and service history.

However people on this forum will want the earth as they are more savvy.

Optional extra's meant no difference to me when was looking to buy my Edition 30 earlier this year, I always buy on condition over colour and spec.

I think it really depends on the condition and service history of the car which you haven't mentioned. The extra's will add something to the value but will help it sell quicker more than anything as already said.

Why add the xenons if you are looking to get rid? Would be better off financial sticking with standard and selling them separately.

I don't really think lots of options add that much to the value of a car but help make it more saleable.

FOR SALE!

Hi. The car has a full service history. By VW up until 100k - then from a german car specialist thereafter. I had a major service done on it in October + DSG service. 4 tyres that have covered about 7,000 miles and will get new brake pads in the coming weeks. It's been well looked after - apart from a couple of dings and dongs on the bodywork...which will also be sorted soon. All of which have been cause by hit and run drivers...the c**ts.

IMGO miles on the clock will always make a bigger difference than options/spec as options/spec can be retrofitted for average money but miles on the clock will always be on the car and every single component of the car.

GLWTS though.
