Wouldn't you have to pay their astronomical "Road Tax" , which would eliminate any saving ??

It's called VRT-vehicle registration tax. If you don't register the car in Ireland you shouldn't have to pay it.

Who would put down 3k on a 30k car then ? Put down 15k and its more reasonable , but then again why pay 30k for a car thats virtually the same as a 15k car , just newer by 3 years ish ??

No idea, my comment was in response to only needing a 10% deposit, and previously Luke questioning whether you'd need a 30% or 50% deposit. A £15K deposit isn't exactly going to be achievable for a lot of people, so a lower deposit may attract some people.

I won't buy a mk7. My car is fully paid for and runs well, so it doesn't really make sense for me personally to spend a fortune for a new one.

I almost bought a new VW the other month but just couldnt bring myself to do it, felt like I was loosing money. Much rather get something a little older.
