Brake fluids

How do, I'm on opieoils at the minute making the most of the discount.

I know I'm coming up to the point at where the fluids going to be changed and I'm after a bit of info which fluid would be best to purchase? Or is it better to leave it to the local garage to make the decision and put in what they believe to be best for the car?

Also does anyone know the volume stored within the brakelines etc?

If you have ABS on your car you ideally would want a brake fluid with low viscosity.

I used to use Ate super blue racing fluid in mine that wasn't low viscosity. TT has convinced me to use the VW oem brake fluid instead.

He put the fear of god into me when he mentioned how much an ABS unit costs to replace. Apparently if VW find the brake fluid isn't oem, they won't warranty it if it goes bad.

Motul RBF600 - ran it in all my cars, never had an ABS problem.

T_T is FAR from being always right, Phil (same goes for me and everyone else here).

I've used whatever it is that both AP Racing and VWR recommend (Dot 5.?) and have had no problems for thousands and thousands of miles (nearly 50k miles).

That isnt what i was saying Robin. Yes it may well work fine, but i guess youve never had to put a claim into VW because you go elsewhere.We are Talking Factory brakes NOT Moddified/Race set-ups.
Vw WILL void your factory warranty if your not using Recommend Brake Fluid in an event of some sort of Brake failure, and not a Racing companys oppinion.

You take your own choices in life, so T_T (in this topic), is correct.

Yes, I have had warranty claims via my VW dealer which have been successful.

But sure, a BRAKE failure is not going to be honoured under warranty if you're not using oem brake fluid. However, my understanding was that the learned gentleman who goes under the name of T_T was claiming that most other fluids shouldn't be used. No matter, it's somewhat academic and I can't be arsed to go into all the detail right now.
 
Re the "racing company's opinion" - AP Racing (they were called Lockheed for many years) have been designing and making brakes for both car manufacturers and international motorsport for a great many decades. I value their opinions more than one bod on the internet.

that's what they reccomended when I spoke to them, but after pondering the idea it didn't make sense till I start doing some track days and at that point I might want to upgrade the whole system anyway.
