I'd say that's a must. I bought a 1 owner std GTi on 99k with FVWSH recently, only to find that the DV was popped, PCV valve goosed, a wheel bearing grumbled, and the cam follower had of course never been changed. It could also do with a cam chain and tensioner, as it sounds more like a TDi than a real TDi on tickover.
I put a lot of faith in a FVWSH, but it transpires that it isn't much more than fluid changes, recall replacements, and a re-gas of the air con when you read the paperwork.
I'd be asking a lot of questions, and if you can get a warranty all the better.
