Noisey car

Hi all, not been around for a while, working away doesn't help, especially when in some sunnier places, but now working in Leeds.

My car, 07 ED30, has developed a noise, most noticeable on good road surfaces at between 30 and 50 MPH, the best way to describe the noise is that its a whirring sound that changes with speed instead of engine revs.  My initial thought is rear wheel bearing but it doesn't seem to change when going round a corner, which I always thought bearings did, but is it the same with a rear bearing.

Does anyone know what it is before I head off to the stealers in Harrogate, or can anyone recommend a good independent garage around the Leeds airport way.

Anyone with any advice or similar experiences?

Misshapen rear tyres on the mk5 is a common problem and gives exactly the symptoms you describe, you'll probably find the inner edge of your rear tyres has worn unevenly, gives them a sawtooth like profile that feels round one way and stepped the other if you run your hand around the inner edge

This is exactly what I had, , 2 x new tyres and proper allignment later it was fixed.

In addition a wheel bearing went not long after but that was more of a whine at higher speed - ie 50mph and above.

That will be the issue, my wifes company tdi had the same noise.

I felt a right muppet when I took it to the VW dealers, convinced it was a bearing. As ^^^^^, just run the flat of your hand round the inner 1/3 of the tread.

This could actually be it, it was an advisory on my last MOT that the tyres were not too far from needing to be replaced and had some uneven wear, I didnt even think about it till you just mentioned it, I will head out in a bit and kop a feel

Then check your tyres while your out.

OK, I have been out to the car and had a good look and feel of the rear tyres and it would appear this could be the issue, both the rears have uneven wear on the inside shoulder, indeed it feels bumpy and not round, so I will order a couple of new tyres and hopefully once fitted I will eliminate the issue.

I would get your tracking done when you fit your new tyres, 4 point laser alignment and not kwik-sh*t or ATS

I Just bought a gti and have exactly the same problem on both rears, can any one suggest some cheapish tyres that the gti won't do exactly the same again with. The ones on the car look nearly new which is a shame, think there cooper tyres.

Who???  

I would put something that's up to the job. I wouldnt scrimp on tyre choice on these cars going foward.

Goodyear asym2 or continental or Michelins
