Condensation driving me insane!!
« on: April 30, 2013, 09:48:02 pm »
Hi guys, as per title I'm having a little battle with my one rear light on my eddy being full of condensation. I've tried disconnecting the rear light and getting a hair dryer to the inside, which didn't work. I've tried leaving it to the little amount of sun we've had thus far to no avail. I've even tried drilling a tiny hole in bottom end of the light unit (which I really didn't want to do) and getting a hair dryer on it then from the outside, which worked for all of about half an hour before fogging up again!

It's now getting to the point where I'm losing my temper with it  :signLOL: has any body got any other solutions, other than buy a new one? Also if the only solution is to buy a new one, what price would I be looking to pay for one?

Thanks in advance.

Are you definitely bolting it on as tight as possible without snapping the frame? I had that issue until I did that..

Is it the light in the bootlid or the part in the car's body?

Yeah it's bolted on as tight as possible by hand.

It's the light that's in the car body. Seen on euro wagens website they do replacement for £55 but I'm sure I read bad things about that company on here so a little skeptical on using them if it comes to buying a new one.

You tried the little pouches of silica gel?

I had a similar problem with one of my Valeo LED rear clusters. As mentioned, make sure its tightened up as mush as possible. Personally I'd fill the little hole you've made with sealant and seal all around the edge of the glass/plastic where it is attached to the main body of the unit.

If there is room inside the standard light cluster, add a good sized silica gel desiccant pouch and hopefully within a week it will clear all the condensation, then chuck that pouch and replace with a fresh (new one).

Ideally do this on a nice dry, non humid day.

Can be got from eBay. Loads about, here's one ad for some 50g pouches (more than big enough)......

Mine

Add Silica Gel pouch

After, now clear

I had this too.

I took the cluster out overnight, left it above a warm radiator, when all moisture went I refitted it with a bead of silicon around the plastic cap. Been perfect since.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Just make sure you tighten your new one up with ratchet/spanner! Finger tight lets the moisture in  :happy2:

I took mine off the other day and used a hair dryer to take the moisture out. Left it in the garden for a few hours.  Put it back kn the car.  Moisture gone :P
