Rear wheel bearings

Hello all,

Well after my last thread about my car being noisey on the road I replaced my rear tyres and the car is still noisey and so went to the local VW garage in Harrogate who confirmed it is indeed the wheel bearing, upon further investigation it was discovered it was both of them.

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy 2 sets for a Golf GTi Edition 30 and also, is it the sort of job I can do myself with minimal equipment (no trolley jack/torque wrench) but a good selection of normal tools (hammers/spanners etc), are there any guides anywhere on line that are trustworthy to get the jist of what I would need to be doing?

I had the same problem and had one of my rear wheel bearings replaced recently.

The downer is that you can't just replace the bearing, it comes as a complete hub/bearing kit at a cost of around £115 for original VW parts. I don't know if there's a decent aftermarket alternative.

A local indy garage did the work and charged me an hour of labour, so all in with the VAT it was £185.

You can do it your self but you need the special socket m16 i think it is for the wheel bolt and a breaker bar

I'm currently doing mine. I got an SKF Bearing/hub on the bay for £50.
An M14 12 point spline bit is needed to take the caliper off, followed by an M18 for the hub bolt.
Mk2 Octavia vRS with K04 conversion, 3"TBE & Decat, APR HPFP, BDM Intake, S3 I/C, Sachs clutch & Unicorn custom map, S3 brakes, AP coilovers, THS mounts.

B8.5 Audi S4 with uprated pulley and unicorn Stage 2

Do it this way mate and save yourself some money...it really isn't hard!

I've not taken the hub off yet, do I need a puller to take it off or will it tap off.
