Loud screeching noise from drivers side front wheel
« on: May 03, 2013, 09:29:35 pm »
Hi all,

Newbie to the site her.

I have a 2008 (58) Golf Gti mk5 in Candy White

Past couple of days i have had a terribly loud and rather scary screeching noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. Ive had the car looked at today by my local VW garage. They couldn't find anything other than some muck on the rear side of the disc and some muck in an around the caliper. I personally thought it was maybe some grit or a stone chipping. Seemed happy with there investigation, picked the car up and back to work.

Drove home from work and heard it again. Also have a funny noise (kind of like a grinding/ scraping with a mixed in swooshing noise) when turning the wheel to the left.

I'm really worried that it's still happening and wondered if you guys could shed any light on it.

Car is extremely well looked after, she's done 30k, just had cambelt replaced and been remapped.

i love the car, but at the minute I'm a little worried to say the least.

Cheers,

Mark
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like a stone trapped behind the brake caliper/disc.

Thanks for the reply.

That's what I though. But VW said they had checked and couldn't find anything of the sort  :sad1:

I have an ETS near me. They are usually pretty good.

Kinda felt VW were fobbing me off and weren't too interested in my problem.

Would this be easily identifiable to someone who knows what they are looking at?

As others have said its probably a bit of grit or the dust shield.
I'd take the wheel, callys and pads off if the dust shield wasn't the issue, have a good look around. :happy2:

I get stones stuck in the disc quite regularly from my driveway. It does produce the really horrible screeching/ scraping noise you describe. Usually falls out after a couple of miles of driving, can sometimes take longer if its a stubborn one.

Hi all

Thanks for the replies.

Just got back from another garage!

The 'noises' didn't occur - surprise surprise!!

He's pushed the 'plates'?? back on all the brakes and blown them all 'down the air line'?!!

I still get a slight scrape when I turn left, but she's booked in for Wednesday to have all the brakes and calipers cleaned out and greased for the grand total of £40!!

Hopefully this will do the trick??

Yes hopefully that should do it.
Without taking the brake pads out you can't be sure all the muck/grit is cleared.
Hopefully its just a bit of grit caught, but could be the pad delaminating from the backing plate or even a bit of the pad broken. Unlikely, but a strip down and check will tell you.
