Interesting Fault - Have Video - ABS / ESP ?
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:55:02 pm »
Afternoon boys and girls,
My beloved TDI has developed an interesting fault, on ignition the ABS light comes on, then around 10 feet down the road the ESP / Traction control light comes on too. There are no messages on the dash or beeps or sounds etc.
I've tried restarting the car multiple times to no avail, however if I ignore the lights the car performs exactly as normal.  Traction control works fine, still grips and holds. Tested a couple of emergency stops on a private road from 30 ish mph and the car stopped just fine without locking up the wheels.

I also have recorded a short clip of this fault for your viewing.

If anyone has any advice then that would be great ! Dont really fancy taking it to the stealers for a diagnostic scan as they want like £65 just for testing, let alone the actual fix !

In my mind its more of a sensor or wire that's fault as apposed to the actual component, as the performance is the same ?
Anywho, heres the video

Thanks folks
JD

Pad wear connector?  Although that should flag a "Check Brakes" message.
Check the Fluid inthe res. could be the sensor there too.
Let's hope it;s not the ABS pump.

All guess work without a scan though.

I would take it to dealer as if it turns out to be the common ABS pump fault which was on Dont get done get Dom you will get it done under warranty.

Against better judgement I'm going to take it to the dealers in the morning and stump up the diagnostic fee if nothing else, this is because if it does turn out to be a common fault then ill look into warranty options.

I am hoping its something daft like a sensor or wire etc as I think this would be the easiest solution. My brakes still perform normally, able to do some 30mph to dead stops without too much fuss, and no locking up. This suggests to me the ABS is actually working fine...mostly.

VCDS was going to be my first point of call, but I've heard that VW themselves have a better version ?

I had this problem a few months ago! ESP light would come on too. Turned out to be a sensor, replaced and reset and touch wood seems to have done the trick.

Good luck!

The way mine seems to be is that ABS light comes on at ignition, the ESP light comes on as soon as I hit 10mph forward, managed to get it a little more than that in reverse and the ESP never came on, which leads me to think a sensor.

Keeping my fingers crossed as from what I've found online the "Dont get done get dom" stuff seems to be for just ESP faults ? and my early mk5 '04 plate is gonna be far outside any kind of warranty as its approaching 100k miles, 99600 if memory serves

*holds breath*

Ok, so I had the car scanned at my local garage as opposed to my dealer. This was the error code given :

01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64): Implausible Signal - Intermittent

My garage seems to think its gonna be a electronics / wiring issue as opposed to a actual ABS pump fail

The ross-tech site seems to think so too

01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
Possible Causes
Fuse(s) faulty
Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64) faulty
ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64) faulty
Brake Electronics Control Module (J104) faulty

Slightly better news than it being the pump itself being dead ! Still a PITA though !
