Aircon Blowing Hot Air
« on: August 06, 2009, 01:40:08 pm »
Got my car back from it's 3 year/60'000 miles service last week (car has done 25,000 miles) and have used the aircon for the first time this afternoon, and on LO it is blowing hot air?

What's going on?!

Your air con system needs a service and recharge, quite common at that sort of age

Check that the fans come on when you turn the air con on. Not the blower fans, but the ones on the radiator.

Mine havent been coming on, its going into the dealership for the 4th time on the 18th to have the compressor replaced under warranty.

3 times it has been in for fault finding, when i told them it was the compressor the first time it went in.  :jumping:

Is it not something that is done when it's serviced Oli?

No, not done as part of a normal service schedule.

No only if you ask for it - Im surprised, as dealers usually recommend it/force it upon you!

Cost should be £50+VAT for a full air con service and re-gas, thats what we charge anyway.

The compressor failed on my car.  Apparently is was something to do with the switch on its end.  The temperature of the air seemed to be fine, then one day it suddenly wouldn't blow cold.  I took it to get recharged at an independent garage and they tried and failed to recharge it.  VW fixed it under warranty.

Damn it, I wished they'd said it might need doing when they serviced it, because now I'm going to have to book it in an faff around getting lifts etc! Oh well, can't have hot air blowing in my face!

Think VW are still doing an offer of full service, recharge and refresh for either £69 or £79.

It only takes 15-30 minutes to do. Doesnt need to be a dealer. In fact, there are cheaper air con specialists out there.

Hmm, just started the car, and put the aircon on. The two fans behind the radiator are not spinning. I'm guessing they should be right?

Yes, they should spin even if the aircon needs recharging. This is what is wrong with my car, and its a faulty compressor that is causing it. Its seized.

Guy at IVS (an independent VW specialist) says that if there is not enough gas the aircon won't kick in at all? It's all French to me.
