Golf gti or tdi?
«

Hey, I'm new here just joined to get some info on whats best to get a golf gti 2litre or tdi 140bhp?
I've had a lot of problems with my current car and when funds allow to possibly get a mk5 golf.
Hoping to get something which doesn't cost the earth to run, is reliable and good fun to drive with a bit of poke
Any information / experiences would be great :)
Thanks

Think I already gave my opinions on uk-mkivs??
Both very good at what they do, but it depends on your needs as to what's better for you.

All depends what your priorities are ? If you want economy and cheaper insurance go for a gt tdi 140 ..if you don't do big milages and don't mind mid 30's economy and prefer the looks and spec of a git then go for that ...I'm personally a derv convert ...I used to have a cupra r and had v5's and v6 engined cars but happy with derv now ...if you get tdi and want to modify the engine then the 140 is best as 170 can be harder to tune with Siemens ecu ...but not impossible just look for one with options fitted to it ..I prefer 2007 onwards versions with gti/jetta style front end as it looks less dated than the earlier mk5 golf ...happy hunting

M8 i had the same questions 12 months ago,i went for 2008 with newer front end gt tdi sport 140 model & im getting late forties around town & 60ish on longer motorway runs. if ya get a decent spec car to start with you can add the gti goodies to the tdi model from ebay & various forums so ya get the best of the gti & gt models

i've been running tdi 140 sport for the last 4 to 5 years and cannot fault it, we even got a newer mk6 gt tdi around 8 months ago and after 3 weeks put it up for sale and kept the mk5 as we prefered it. and although it's completely standard it was much quicker than the mk6.

Mate for what its worth I switched from a diesel mg zr to a gti ed30 nearly a year ago. Love it and doing mostly short drives day to day I can live with the extra running cost but if I was still going up and down motorways to work no doubt I'd have a gt tdi 140 and as mentioned prob add gti looks and a remap

Long distance Diesel Gt short GTi.
Have you thought about the Seat Leon 150 cupra diesel, getting a bit old but I had one when I was doing a 100 mile trip everyday and could not fault it,45 plus to the gallon regardless of how I drove it and pretty quick. Easy to re-map as well.

Also road tax is cheaper than GTi.
Having said that I now drive a 2005 Golf GTI but only have a 18 mile round trip to work so use the bike

A GTD would have me tempted over a GTI, but none of the others.

MK5 GT TDI 170 ticks all the boxes for me, especially as i do about 500-600 miles a week and average 48mpg :)

I had the same problem in February and plumped for the GT Tdi, I do 50 miles a day. I'd have loved a GTI, but glad I went diesel now that I get 55mpg. If I was doing far less miles, I'd have gone GTI!!!

As the other guy I posted on uk-mkivs already. Pretty sure there's enough from the threads to take away and make your decision
