had a customer come to work in a audi complaining he has a lot of warning lights lit up on his dash board and the battery is flat.I open the bonnet and notice the aux belt missing and also the pulley hadsheered of the alternator

That'd do it for sure!
Put a new belt and clutch pulley on recently as this is getting more and more common.
