Castrol Oils
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:00:43 pm »
I was interested to find a different Castrol oil when I purchased two more 4L of the LongLife Castrol that I've always used in the 18 months I've had my GTI.

When I bought the car, it had only had 2 oil changes in 54k miles on the VW LongLife oil service. 5w30 Castrol LongLife stuff was used on both occasions.
Even with no engine mods, I change the oil every 8k or so since purchased at 54k miles. It's now on 75k miles.

Now when I bought my Castrol LongLife stuff @ £44.99 on Thursday evening, I saw some other Castrol 5w30 fully synthetic type of oil @ £25.99. Spec wise, it looked the same as what I use.
The only difference is it doesn't specify it's for LongLife. Can I use the non-LongLife Castrol stuff now I've got the oil servicing on my own more regular service schedule?

Here's the one I've always used to date:

Here's the one I saw at £25.99 that I'm querying about:

Thanks
Pete

Does it say "504 approved" on the back?

I remember Teutonic_Tamer warning to stay away from Magnatec stuff but can't remember why.

EDIT: Apparently not 504 approved, hence keep away, keep away.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

No your not I did too! Its a con for you to buy another litre for the oil change and then another for topping up.

Remind me where I said to stay away from Magnatec?  :P

Magnatec is very good oil - it just isn't suitable for a Mk5 GTI.  If you have a Mk2 GTI - Magnatec would be the dogs . . .  :happy2:

But that was in relation to it not meeting VW 504, rather than staying away from Magnatec altogether/
Good grief . . . do you have any French or Italian in your blood, Stealth?  That was a pretty impressive wave of the white flag!
