Check Oil Light
« on: June 01, 2013, 10:51:44 pm »
Hello,

I did a 200mile round trip today, when I started the car up for the return journey (been sat for 4-5hrs) The car threw up the check oil light. I turned the car off again, and checked the dipstick which seemed quite low at just on the 'min' level. (Maybe I'm a bit of an idiot, but I always find the Mk5's dipstick a bit tricky to read).

Started the car up again, Oil light gone, drove home no trouble at all. I'm just a bit concerned now, does it sound like the car is desperate for some Oil? it was serviced by VW about a month ago. Should I buy some 5W-30, top it up and keep reading the level on a flat surface just to be sure?

Thanks for your help, I know I'm a bit of an idiot for not checking it before doing the drive today, I just thought VW would have checked it all on the service, I guess I've learnt not to trust them and just keep on top of it myself.

TFSI eat oil, top it up! Especially if it's moaning to be fed.

Yes get it topped up with the correct oil asap and just keep an eye on the oil level. I check mine about every two weeks just to be on the safe side also it's good to keep some oil in the boot incase the engine needs a top up when your out and about.

Thanks for your replies, I just went outside to check it again after getting home. Its on the 'N' of the MIN. I'm guessing thats pretty dodgy. Going to detour via a Shell garage (will they sell Castrol 5W-30?) before work tomorrow morning! Good Idea to keep it in the boot, I'll set a reminder to check it every week now.

Thanks again for your swift replies!

Hello, we have had our Gti now for about 8 weeks and I have had to top up the oil twice in that time after several fairly long journeys. Like you I also found the dip stick a little tricky to gauge properly so you are not on your own with that one mate.

I have read on the forum that these engines do seem to like a bit of oil so I check mine every two weeks now to be on the safe side and just keep a litre in the boot for emergencies. Cheers

Thanks, I bought some Castrol 5W-30 off Amazon yesterday, just waiting for it to be delivered today before I drive it again!
