ED30 to Mk6 GTi?

Hi guys

So I'm getting a bit twitchy with the Eddie getting closer to that mental barrier that is 100k (currently at 77k) and looking at options for a change.

Love the DSG so will be staying VW/Audi and currently considering the MK6 GTi as budget will be around £17-18k or possibly S3 Sportback.

Has anyone made the move and would there be a noticeable difference in power/driving experience versus the ED30?

The Eddie has been a brilliant motor with 3 years of happy and trouble free motoring that still puts a smile on my face but it's going to have to be changed at some time in the next year or two!

What other options are there that you have considered or changed to?  I do a fair few miles but cost of fuel not a big issue and the move to a diesel isn't a route I've considered.

Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated but I guess it maybe down to just getting out there and test driving

It's the same engine as the ED30 so would be very similar to drive. Mk6 GTI with the TSI lump would be a better "upgrade" from a mk5. ED35 doesn't have any real benefits over the mk6 for me. A lot more money for an older engine and a few badges 

Mk6 R is acceptable with the 4WD though

Mk6 'R' mate all the way but price's seem to be a little steep at the moment,i'm considering a E92 M3 at one point in the future but will be sticking with the Edition30 for quite some time yet.

Would love the MK6 R but yes prices a little steep for my budget right now!

ED35 is nice but agree that the price differential versus a decent spec'd MK6 GTi does not warrant the spend.

Guess its down to my local VW to take a GTi for a test drive and then off to Audi for a spin in an S3

I've just gone from 5 years in an ed30 into a mk6 gti albeit an ed35, I was originally looking for a 'regular' gti but my ideal spec was thin on the ground and nearly all were more expensive than the 35 i eventually bought..
For me the nicer standard spec (imo) of the ed35 along with the same tuning potential of my ed30 and the hopefully better retained value made the ed35 the obvious choice, that being said I'd have been happy with a normal gti as the mk6 seems a decent upgrade from the mk5 so far

I do really like the look and spec of the ED35 but prices seem to start around £23k and with the purchase of a new house this year can't quite warrant the extra money required.

I'm also not a huge fan of leather seats, the ED30 seats were perfect for me with the 1/2 leather so probably look for a MK6 with cloth trim but all the other goodies included 

Or maybe wait until next year for the MK7 GTi to hit the used market and finances slightly better?

Like I said and I'm sure most ED30 owners will echoe, it's such a great car that is so hard to change without spending a lot more money for something as good but newer.

Yeah I agree that the fact my ed30 was such a fantastic car made finding a replacement super hard! Probably one of the reasons I ended up in a 35 tbh as its just a newer slightly more polished 30 really 

I'd also prefer 1/2 leather and would love the euro 35 leather/alcantara but with a new baby arriving the full leather is probably the more practical wipe clean option lol!

I paid £22k for my 10 month / 7k miles old ed35 and finding a regular gti of the same age/miles with xenons and dsg for similar money was nigh on impossible..

Really liking the change from mk5 to mk6 though, very happy!

Golf R
Edition 35
Keep the Edition 30
Mk6 GTD
Mk6 GTI

Having a ED30 and just sold a R , My advice go and find the lowest mileage  ed30 or pirelli  and stay with the mk5, I thought the mk6 felt heavy  and the MK5 ed30 still makes me smile and mine got treated on Friday to everything at its service.

Yes Scooba, have had my eye on a low mileage Pirelli, matches my ED30 spec but also has Xenons and a year newer, however priced about £3k above what I think mine is worth, think if I'm going to change then might as well get something different hence the thought on the S3 Sportback with prices hovering around the £18k mark.

Best get some test drives booked but no rush as still have that little beaut sat outside which is the amazing ED30 and still has plenty of smile filled miles in her yet

If you can, try and get an extended test drive in a mk6 gti, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised 
The Tsi motor definitely has more low down grunt especially when mapped compared to the '30 and 'feels' quicker and more responsive around town etc
As for out and out speed, I never took my ed30 past stage 1/exhaust/intake level but I've been on track many times with 'Neilgti' off here in his tuned mk6 gti and there was nothing between the cars, we had them side by side down the kemmel straight at spa from 80-140ish and I had to back off first as he was cheating with bigger brakes
