Having to move to the black stuff...
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:49:51 pm »
Hi all!

I have just accepted a new job which involves driving a lot of town driving so unfortunately it means that changing the GTI for a diesel makes a lot of sense.
So I was just after a little advice and opinions...
I have around £6000ish to spend what would you choose?
A Mk5 GT Sport 140
A Mk5 Gt Sport 170
A BMW 118D
A BMW 120D
Or anything else I might not have considered...

Any help?

Best value for money is mk4 130 pd for my money and you'll have plenty in reserve!
Now if that's not your thing 140 GT is good but won't leave nothing in reserve for those unexpected bills.

Hmmm i see you point but before I got my Mk5 GTI I had a Mk4 GT TDI 150 remapped to 180 and it was a quick car but it just felt very dated so I dont think I could go back to that personally.

You'll find the GT140/170 is holding value very well at the minute, and good ones sell really fast at that price.
Consider the Leon mk2 with these engines also?
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Seen some fantastic mk4 for 3k but only average GT mkvs for for 6k - money in the bank means what's a an unexpected bill!

Get IPhone music system and use iPhone on Bluetooth as the Nav system and the mk4 is upto date, then when you find a good value mkv you'll sell the mk4 130 pd a lot easier as its cheap insurance group 6.

The 170 isn't really suited to town driving as it has a particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust which can clog up from lots of town driving. Some of the BMW's may have them too (I'm no BMW expert). Worth checking before you buy  :happy2:

Stick with the 2.0 tdi 140 pd (pre-08 plate) less problem - I needed one too - needed up with a jetta sport 57 plate for less than £6000

I had the same scenario, £6k and wanting a diesel.  Plumped for a 56 plate 140 GT for £6100 with 100k on the clock. Car is spotless and fully vw serviced......55-60mpg and haven't looked back since!  Looked for bmws, but couldn't seem to get the same spec and condition for £6k.

Ive managed to find a local 170 just within budget so Im going to look at it tomorrow after work but yes I have heard that the DPF is a bit of a pain in the arse when it comes to town driving...I would be happy with the 140, especially with a remap however I cant seem to find a 140 that has the same front end 'gti bumper' as the 170 does...am I just finding it hard to find or did it never happen?! - personally I dont really like the look of the front end of the standard 140s im finding

P.s if I just removed the DPF from the 170 would it be the preferable car? I've heard of people doing this, is it legal? Or is it a bit like removing a Cat from a petrol car?

Go for the 170, delete the DPF and get it remapped afterwards, don't bother with the 140.

Its legal to remove the dpf ....you could just remove that and have it mapped and have a quick diesel then ....just make sure its had the injectors changed under warranty by vw ...also check if its had oil pump hex key and gear changed ...up to 2008 these cars as also the 140 suffered with oil pump gear failure ...so if you can't find out don't be put off just get the revised bits and pop the sump off and change it ...far far cheaper to do preventative then to have it fail and kill turbo and maybe engine

I can't see you getting much for your money from a 1 series tbh. They're all either high milers, per face lift or poverty spec.

How about the Leon FR? What about a smaller engine petrol car? Something like a 57-08 plate Mini Cooper would probably cost you allot less in fuel, compared to a 170 diesel car...and not much slower!  Or go for the cooper S (R56) for the best of both.

Don't get a petrol cooper they are crap on fuel, worse than the GTI!  And much slower, we had one for a year... It replaced the town car yaris tsport which was quicker and MuCH better on fuel. Cooper S is a hoot but probably worse again on juice.

The 140 is a smaller turbo but less lag iirc.  Can't stand laggy motors... Had a Volvo Eco same as focus 1.6d for a while and was constantly having to find lower gears as there was no pull at low RPM, the GTI incomparison pulls well from almost nothing, K03, which is where you would think the diesel would be better... Longer gearing for the economy no doubt.

Go do some test drives and see what you think. :happy2:

If your looking to tune it then I'd go 140 as there's more potential to tune it over the 170 iv read
