Hi Keith,

Yes, I'd looked at the APR one - the THS one is almost exactly the same......same dimensions, same construction, same volume, same size pipework and also rated to 600bhp. In fact, if you scrubbed out the APR decals and the THS decals I bet you'd be hard pushed to spot the difference

Linky?

Did someone knock off our design? :sad1:

I found them.  It looks like they knocked ours off but there are enough differences to separate them from a design perspective to where they shouldn't operate identically.  They chose to shorten the end tanks and change the end tank design enough to destroy the inherent flow distribution properties of our intercooler.

This means their core should be less efficient due to the way the air will follow the path of least resistance and collect into the middle of the core effectively negating 20% of the core size.

It looks to me like they didn't actually design theirs for best operation but to claim an addtional inch of width over ours and to facilitate ease of manufacture at a facility that is not capable of the intricacy of our end tank castings.

Other than that which is actually terribly significant, its pretty similar to ours.

My cooler!  :pomppomp:

Yes sir!  Sleep well at night knowing you are of the caliber to have chosen the real deal and are insured the best performance and reliability for your car possible!

Sure you could have saved a couple of hundred with the other offering but there are definitely some advantages to ours and we appreciate your support very much!

....Hmm, that's enough info to make me reconsider what was my intention to buy a THS intercooler.

I have no animosity towards Forge at all.  They have a different philosophy regarding modifying cars than we do is all.  We approach it from an OEM perspective which seems to create some questions as to why we don't follow suit with the bulk of the aftermarket.  Sometimes people at other companies get upset with the way I explain things to them which is fine as its not my job to help them understand there could have been better design choices but to help the enthusiasts understand why we choose what we do and why we didn't choose the way other people do it.

Hi again Keith,

What does the APR 'cooler flow in terms of g/s?

The THS one had some data logging done on it by DomT off here and it manages to flow over 480g/s. Using the rough yardstick of dividing by 0.8 to get the handling capabiltity it roughly equates to 600bhp.

TC, are you tempted then by the TSI conversion and a MKVI? :pomppomp:

Or the MKV conversion? :drinking:

Our flow testing is measured in CFM and is only indicative of the amount of air that will be able to pass through the inlet of the core and then through the outlet of the core and has no bearing on its ability to effectively cool such CFM.  It merely relays that a certain volume of air can pass through the core without restriction.

The size of the core, efficiency of the core and overall air distribution AS WELL AS flow ability determine its effectiveness and worth.

I am sure I can dig up the flow we measured as this was part of our calculation to determine 600hp of capability but I'm not sure what flow data alone proves, if anything when attempting to compare 2 intercoolers of similar size that both obviously have the ability to flow enough cfm without obstruction to support 600hp.  We also have some real world data to present:
