Rear Brakes. 260mm to 286mm
« on: June 16, 2013, 01:42:42 am »
I have a 2005 Audi A3 2.0T, DSG. Can't seem to get a firm answer on Audi forums to this.

Question I have is: For some reason I have 260mm rear brakes (there was a switchover to 286mm around 2008 from what I can gather).
I have some 286mm rear rotors ready to fit but need to know what else is required.

Obviously dust shields won't fit and will need to be removed or replaced.

Can I reuse my existing calipers and carriers for the 286mm discs once the dust shields are removed?
The reason I am thinking I can, is that the pads that i recently fitted were sold with the 286mm rear rotors and fit my existing calipers fine (same pad part number for both 286mm and 260mm rotors).

Or do I need both new calipers and carriers? Or just new carriers to use with my existing calipers?

I could have sworn my 2006 has 286mm rear discs. I will check at some point tho. If I have the smaller discs I'll want to know the answer to this question as well! Thanks for bringing this to my attention

The 286mm disc is peculiar to the GTI initially around 2005, I think it started across to A3s about 2007.

For search purposes its also worth noting that if you buy a 286mm disc from VW now it will actually turn up as a 282mm disc to get rid of the awful lip the bigger disc was generating.

If you need some 286/282mm GTI rear Calipers and carriers I maight be able to find some for you

I'd be after a set too then Dave. I don't suppose you have an Audi set rather than a GTI set? Don't really fancy the red caliper for the rear

TIA

I reused the caliper from the touran, and only changed the carrier and disc, that was all that was needed to go bigger in the rear  :happy2:

Thankyou Dave. So you are saying that the caliper is indeed different and will need to be switched out?

either changed or painted to match the carrier, but the 260mm caliper works fine with the 288mm disc and carrier

That's another thing to be tackled this summer then... unless I go for S3s!

If you're sticking with the NQS then think about the caddy rear mod.

We've been running standard Caliper 335mm rears on the TTRS now for 18 months with superb results, that cars disc size OEM was 370/310 we're running 362/335 and its SO better balanced, feels planted.

Should provide good results on the Golf as the vertical C of G is higher, only really required for fronts maybe 350mm plus for example.

The bill with the RS6 rotors was well ver £800, trying to work on half that, going to sling some on the AKS car and get some miles on them
