VW Service Plan - 2nd service - what does it include?
« on: June 16, 2013, 12:29:06 pm »
Car is due for the 2nd of its services at the stealers under the VW Service Plan we acquired when we bought the car.

The letter says that at 20,000 miles or 24 months it will be due for an inspection service.

Is this 'inspection service' the same thing as a major service or are the two entirely different? How often should the car have a major service?

I seem to remember at the time of buying the car and getting the service plan that it was supposed to include one ordinary service (which it had last year) and 1x major service - or have i made this up?  :laugh:

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Cheers  :happy2:

I've managed to answer this myself.

Yes an inspection service is a major service. Major services are supposed to be conducted every 2 years. Every other year its an ordinary service.

Major service under the fixed service plan is supposed to include the replacement of:

* Spark plugs
* air filter
* fuel filter
* dust and pollen filter

obviously they check other features of the car but should they require replacement the cost of these parts would fall outside of the plan but apparently would be fitted free of charge.

I wont get an oil change as i had this at the ordinary service last year (plus i dont drive the effer enough to warrant a change every year, so the top up i did the other week will be just fine).

Hope this helps anyone else who finds themselves unsure about the service plan, as i was this morning.  :happy2:

Next year the task will be to find a good, reputable independent in the west london area as i dont fancy bending over and taking one from the stealers  :rolleye:

I was trying to figure out the service plan myself recently as my service is due in the next couple of weeks...

As far as I'm aware, the major service (spark plugs etc) is carried out at 4yrs/ 40k miles intervals, whichever comes first.

Every 2 yrs or 20k miles, it's the 'middle' service, basically same as the minor oil change service but changing the dust and pollen filter too.

Every year or 10k miles, oil change service.

It would seem excessive to change the spark plugs every 2 years, unless if you do 40k miles in that time (or if your car is mapped perhaps).

The first brake fluid change is after 3 yrs, then every 2 yrs.

Are you sure they change the fuel filter as part of the service, I didn't think they included that? Might be worth double checking, it's worth changing. :happy2:

I was told fuel filter is not a service item on any service, it has to be requested as an extra.

Spark plugs - changed at 60k, i requested mine were done when it last went in at 48k as it was covered on the list for a major service, along with all the filters etc..

A child could have written a better manual than mine! It contains the most crucial stuff but does seem to miss a lot

But yeh, my golfs unique, as Tortaruga says, read the manual!

Service requirements or what you are *supposed* to get when you sign up and fork out for a service plan? Bit of a difference  :wink:
