Oil Pressure light since service

As per the title just looking for some info on this

I had my car serviced a week ago with a known VW garage, everyone seems to rate him quite high so I took it to him

car had done 140k when the service was done, but I was driving home the other night and the Oil warning flashed and told me to stop due to low oil pressure, which I did, checked the oil and it had plenty of oil in so I left it a bit, then started it back up and it had gone off, I drove up the road and it came on again so I pulled in at a petrol station and left it

managed to get it to the garage the following day which was downt he road and he told me I can't drive it from there as the oil pick had become blocked and I'd been lucky as it could have caused damage, but a few mates who work as mechanics all have said the same thing... he has used the wrong oil

he's telling me it's carbon build up on the sump thats been chewed up and blocked the oil pick up, which is the more likely of scenarios?

I've rung him to check and he said he's used 5/30 Fully synth oil but didn't say what brand oil

a bit worried now about using the car incase it has caused any damage, or if I'm going to be looking for a new engine fairly soon

oil pickup strainer is a common fault and far more likley to put the oil pressure light on than the wrong oil being used. The oil pressure sensors on most VAG cars also fail causing the same light to come on.

Yeah oil pickup sludging is common on a lot of cars, big time on the SAAB T7's, kills the turbo in the process.  It was usually down to poor maintenance and not changing the oil regularly enough and not fully syn.  It's something that would happen over time not after one drop.  I ran a T7 Viggen to 160k from 50k and didn't suffer it, either by luck, or being really anal about oil servicing. (Wish I'd kept that car now, probably become a classic, doh.)  

Assuming it's not a faulty sensor, get the pickup cleaned out... but worth noting that A LOT turbo's failed shortly after pickup sludge cleaning on the Aero/Viggens. :sad1:

Well, further on this

The garage that did the service where I took it back to said they'd look at it today to find out if its done any damage, turns out they've carried out the work on Saturday and not told me and are now sticking me with a £284 repair bill as they said they couldn't use the original oil/filter they'd replaced and stuck another service on it

He said it's carbon deposits that have built up on the sump that will have caused it, but most people I've spoken to have said it's wrong oil used

To me it seems to be the long life service intervals - not all owners have used cheaper oil since the vehicle have had FVWSH.

£284 is about the right price at a shop to have the work done. The oil pick up would be £50 by the time they put their "part tax" on it, oil and filter another £75 and 2-3 hours book labour.
I did the work myself for the cost of a socket set from Halfords.  :happy2:

As linked I had a similar issue. My car was on long-life oil changes and all but two services were at a VW dealer (the other 2 were at a BMW dealer which was local to the guy who owned it at the time).

These engines are (from what I can tell) very prone to carbon build up. Regular oil changes will keep that in check.
After the new pick up has been fitted with new oil and filter I personally would run the oil for a month and then drop it and install a new filter as well as well as fresh oil. Then you can go back to your 8-10k servicing.
