My friend is looking to get a mk5 diesel, GT tdi 140/170

He will be looking at high miles 100k+.

Wanting some info on DPF?

Whats the issues with these?
approx cost for removal/map?
Is there obvious signs it needs removing/replacing?

He will be getting a DSG version, Did the paddles become standard at some point?

Turbos, which turbo (if any) is stronger?

Any issues I can look out for Diesel specific that would help me point him towards a well looked after car?

Ok dpf can be troublesome but can last ..my mate has just removed his at 200000 on his passat ..just look for if it keeps trying to regenerate as that is a good indication of early failure they look like this on 170

He removed it cut it open and gutted it then re welded it back up ...think it cost him £100 for it to be wrote out of mapping ..but he hasn't had a re map so if you want that it could be wrote in at same time
Not sure on paddles thought they were gti only ...just make sure box has been serviced with sump off new filter and oil
The turbos aren't the strongest but are ok if servicing has been kept up

Ok so weather I was buying a 140 or 170 you need to decide how much power you want from it ...if its just a simple map then either will do ...if you want to go for big power ie 200bhp plus then the 140 is better as the 170 has Siemens ecu and although not impossible to get bhp from can be troublesome when chasing power ..next I would as a matter of course change the hex drive in the oil pump even if they said its been done ...it will cost you £50 in parts including oil ...as failure will cost you a lot more ..vw will try and sell you a balancer shaft but you don't very often need it and it costs £900+ vat lol ...on the 170 make sure its had the injectors changed under warranty and most of all some evidence of oil services ..as these are crucial as I'm sure you are aware hope that helps a little

Just seen photos ...I think 2006/07 they changed from old style to jetta/gti front end but 170 might have always had it

power wise 140 will be fine, he wont be mapping. Only looking at the 170 because of the front bumper

What do you mean by regenerate?

The dpf fills up over time ..if you connect up vagcom you can see it in percentages ..ie 80% is nearly full ...when it starts getting past this it will start to regenerate ie a light will come on the dash and you must not switch off the engine but must keep on driving preferably at higher speed as it sort of burns the soot out of the dpf ..but as the car gets older and so the dpf then it gets to s point when it can't get rid of all the soot so that's when you start getting early regeneration and eventually the light stays on ...tbh when its removed you can see better mpg as its restrictive but you might get a little bit of smoke as the dpf cuts out black smoke

Also with thev170 make it has had the recall done on the injectors..The newer diesel had better turbos fitted than the early versions like mine

Having had both the 140bhp (BKD) and 170bhp (BMN) Golf i personally prefer the 170 only because of the extra torque, power and styling. My current 170 has covered just over 113k miles, 11k of which have been over the last 5 months and i've not had any major issues.

Things to look for;

140 - (BKD)
- Rev A & B heads (2004-2006) can become porous causing head Gasket failure. Head was redesigned at Rev C (Sept 2006) and is practically bomb proof. To identify the Head revision remove the engine cover and look for the part number located bottom right hand corner under the fuel lines.
- Warm start issues, when the engine has reached 90c and restarted it takes a little longer to catch. Likely cause, warn starter motor
- DMF - If when cold it sounds like Skeletor having a lazy in a biscuit tin and the sound disappears with the clutch peddle down the DMF needs replacing
- Turbo

170 - (BMN)
- Fuel injector and wiring loom - Check with VW Customer services if the call has been done, if it hasn't book it in.
