Please help...front wheel bearing problem!
« on: June 29, 2013, 08:44:28 pm »
I was trying to replace the front wheel bearing today and everything seemed to be going well, that is until it came to removing the actual bearing. I'm assuming that a combination of heat from the failed bearing and rust has essentially welded the hub to the knuckle. I've tried the usual trick and hit the sh*t out of it with a hammer, then went at it with a chisel but it refuses to budge.

Anyone any ideas?

:surprised: ok, now I'm confused. I done some reading up on the mk5 front bearings and was lead to believe that the bearing is pre pressed into the hub, therefore you replace the whole hub instead of just the bearing?? Any of the guides I've seen are a simple enough unbolt and bolt on job.

Sorry yes a whole new hub will work, i thought you just had a bearing which would require a press....you CAN just buy the bearing you see. Anyway if you have a new hub just use a puller!  :happy2:

No, its the hub with the bearing in it...I got the driveshaft removed from the hub quite easily. I had everything off, disc, caliper and carrier, axle bolt and the 4 12mm triple square bolts for the hub. The old hub should then have just came out but it's almost as if it's welded in, it won't move at all.

Thank f*ck, you had me worried there lol. I thought about using a puller but tbh it's basically welded in so decided a puller wouldn't do much.

Gave this another go tonight. Tried with a puller and it wouldn't budge. Then removed the abs sensor and put a blow torch on the hub in the hope that it would do something but this was a no go as well. I've finally gave up and will be taking it to a VAG specialist :sad1:.

Your bearing and hub assembly should slide straight off the driveshaft, you shouldn't need to pull off the bearings.

It should come off,

1, remove wheel
2,remove brake and caliper
3, remove abs sensor
4, loosen ball joint nut and take off hub
5, drive shaft nut off and push out drive shaft
6, back of hub remove nut and bolt which squeezes hub onto shaft, split this open a bit
7, remove 3 bolts from swivel joint under hub
8, remove hub..

refit new hub.

This is from memory buddy, but that is basic.

Is 6 on that list the 4 m12 spline bolts?

Just Had a look mate, its just one bolt and nut that goes through back of hub like a clamp that goes onto bottom of strut, once nut and bolt removed you need to spread open the hub clamp.

dosnt say to undo any of the 4 nuts at all.

I've got a 2005 gti mate.

This is the same as the new hub that I have, defo need to remove those m12 spline bolts.

This is what I done:
1. Remove wheel
2. Remove caliper and carrier.
3. Remove disc.
4. Remove driveshaft nut and push the shaft out to give enough room to get at the 4 m12 spline bolts.
5. Remove the 4 m12 spline bolts.
According to the guide I followed, at this point the wheel bearing assembly/hub should just come out but the mounting surface of the hub has corroded and looks almost welded in place. Phoned a VAG specialist near me who was highly recommended but they finish today for 2 weeks...he did say that they would just be doing the exact same as i've been doing (beating the sh*t out of the hub) and to keep trying and it should eventually dislodge.

if you take off the m12 spline bolts the bearing and hub come off then you need to get the bearing off the hub spindle using a press once this is done you need to remove the ring from the old bearing that will be stuck on the spindle use a puller to do this then press all the new bits on and replace back on carr with 12 mm splines

On the basis that you won't need the hub nor the 4 M12 spline bolts, leave the 4 M12 spline bolts in by about 6 threads and hit each one in turn hard with a big hammer from behind. Don't be tempted to get a screwdriver or anything else "flat" between the bearing and the hub on the front face and start wrestling with it.

You may need to sacrifice your M12 socket cheaper than taking it to the Indy.
