I have an issue where my internet connection/wifi drops out when transferring files from my laptop to a NAS drive connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable. I have tried connecting laptop via ethernet to the router and that worked with no issues. NAS box is a D-Link DNS-320 and the router is a Belkin N1 Vision.

If anyone can help with any tests I can do or has exerienced this behaviour and can advise on a fix I would be very greatful

Any other local wifi networks using the same channel as yours?

Switch your wifi off if using ethernet. You dont need both connected at same time.

Give that a try.

How far from router?
Any interference in line of sight?  Microwave / washing machine etc.  Do you have wire mesh in your walls?  (some houses do)
Which WiFi band are you using? B/G/AC.. are all devices compatible to run said band.
Which OS you using? (8 sucks for WiFi problems)
Which WiFi card?  Software up to date?
Change WiFi channels.
Can you test other file transfer from different devices using the same WiFi?

Usually just chasing down the culpurit, it'll be there, somwehere.

I checked this the other day and changed to one that no one else was using.

Switch your wifi off if using ethernet. You dont need both connected at same time.

Give that a try.

I only have a laptop and wifi was turned off when I was testing with the cable.

When I am transferring the laptop in no more than 8ft from the router so nothing in the line of sight between the router and me on the sofa lol. Only thing I have near it which is turned on is a cordless phone which is within 2ft.

Currently using band N and also changed laptop wifi adaptor setting to suit.

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Wifi adaptor is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n and drivers are upto date.

Wifi channel has been changed previously.

I tried to transfer a large file from the NAS to my phone over the wifi and it through a time out error and failed suggesting it is doing the same.

You tried using G band for a test?  My old router sucked on N but was rock solid on G.  Now have A/C router and it's solid on each.

Then, turn off the wireless phone, just to test.

I'd also recommend turning off any flitering / firewall / AV etc. just to test.

I wonder also, if your wired connection is completing said transfer A LOT quicker than WiFi therefore not experiencing any dropouts that it would if it we're transferring for longer... then it could be something other than WiFi that is the issue... i.e NAS

Can you transfer files from the net without issue via WiFi?

Also, lol, what security are you running on WiFi... WEP / WPA2 etc...

Could also try another laptop/computer. That way you can rule out if its not something on your computer.

My gut feeling is the problem lies with the wireless part of that Belkin router.

Just a little update. I swapped back to my old router last night which is a Netgear DG834G from memory. Although the max rate was down from 300 to 54 due to it being an older router that only supports Band G it transferred 4GB of data with no issues. Albeit alot slower. Was only getting around 1.5mbps as opposed to 11mbps. Would like to do some more testing but seems I possibly need a new router.
