Help - Bonnet - Cable - Broken
« on: July 10, 2013, 08:50:52 pm »
As the title says, my cable has snapped and now I can not open the bloody bonnet. Can you guys give me some help?

This is a MK5 GT - old shape front (Not the GT/GTI grill style - later shape)

I need some helps in

1. How do I remove the front badge/grill
2. How to pop the bonnet once I've done the above

Pics would be helpfull, esp of of the bonnet catch, so I can see what bit I need to aim for to pop it....

Depending on where your cable is broken, if you can get your car in the air and get onto the end of the cable you may be able to grip it and pull to pop the bonnet.

I had to use force to break the grille of my wife's PD105 as there was no access to the catch with the badge off. Once the grille is off there are 3 screws to unscrew the catch which will lift out of the front panel still attached to the bonnet.
Unfortunately in my case, I need to source a replacement grille.

The small 'ball' broke off the end inside the car, I was hoping the cable would still be reachable from the inside, unfortunately not.

If I can't get it from the front, can some advise - where the cable runs? I've been told the cable is in two parts.

The cable runs up the drivers side through a grommet which comes out underneath the scuttle panel. Then it goes to around the front passenger headlight area. From here the cable has a connector thing to another cable which then activates the bonnet.

OK - so is the best thing to do, get the car into the air and try and get the cable from under the car where is goes through the gromet into the engine bay?
