Finally decided at last: r32 rear
« on: August 19, 2009, 06:54:40 am »
It's been a long time reaching this point, I've flipped several times on this one but after giving my quad tips some elbow grease at the weekend I've decided I want to keep them! However I just have to lose the abt lower valance.

I need a quad outlet therefore I need an r32 rear valance, the reflectors and a black insert.

Now reason for post.

1. Where to buy, eBay few and far between. I've seen them in this site
http://vagen.vg//catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2762

But reckon that won't have the correct insert for the quad tails... Is there anywhere cheaper?

2. Re the insert. Someone was selling a carbon fibre one on here a while back but can't find the post. I'm not a c/f junkie so simples black would be ok. Can anyone remember who was selling it? Else what are my options?

(pretty sure it was on here as I can't use the other forums classifieds section as it's not mk5 segregated)

3. Expecting to pay circa £100-150 for paint, am I about right?

Have you thought about getting OEM pricing, even if it's just for comparison?

Thanks Stu I plan to do that today, though don't reckon I will get the insert to suit the quads. I know the c/f is really expensive. I don't want to pay that much so I'm hoping there are alternatives.

Need to talk to Vw tomorrow....

To help me cut down on the frustration of the call, does anyone have to hand the partnumber of the r32 rear valance (that bit below the number plate)...am I right it's called a rear spoiler (unusually).

I just have acces via iPhone and can't seem to find it using the search facility.

I've already got quad milltek with the abt valance, don't think it looks quite right. Therefore my options are

a. Sell the car
b. Fit new lower r32 rear bumper, valance, insert and refelectors. Which requires a £120 paint and fit job.
c. Screw my eyes up when i walk round back of the car and forget it.
d. Some other combo (I'd rather not).

Option b is being discussed.  The outstanding question is whether there are other inserts available .....that don't cost a limb of my first born....NB the upper rear does not need to be changed. It has parking sensors,it is going nowhere.

Another option might be to change just your Milltek rear sections to have different exhaust tips. This would change the look. Although now mine are ceramic coated satin black, they will also be available in silver if you prefer.

The tips are thinner and slash-cut and don't stick out so much. I used to have Milltek straight-cut quads with an Abt and then later the R32 rear with the same quads and now a pre-production Milltek backbox etc.

The version I am running currently is the 'quieter' one and its loudness is inbetween the existing Resonated and Non-Resonated currently available. At the end of this month Milltek are manufacturing a louder version section to put on my car and then after a few weeks of living with it (including a Nurburgring trip) it'll be decided what to offer customers.

A further option is to check if OSIR offer a fibreglass or plastic (preferred) version of their quad exhaust trim which I know fits the R32 'rear spoiler' (correct VW name).

Here are some pics of various stages of mine which may be helpful : -

I find the satin black ceramic tips extremely easy to keep clean and also I think the look is far more subtle but still different. Sorry to stick some expensive carbonfibre under your nose! For me, the quads are still there but not so much in yer face - The slash-cut tips look more possibly 'oem'.

Hope this helps in some way!

Thanks for taking the time to reply Robin, much appreciated.

I am pushing my budget just now, so wouldnt intend to change my milly.  Actually have come to like them, though for ages I thought they were too bling.

I will try osir to see if they've got a plastic trim...then faint at the cost and talk to Rich again.

....I know exactly what you mean about the 'bling' factor! I sometimes thought that but only for a short time. I so much prefer the symmetry of pipes each side, though not the way VW have styled the Mk6 GTI rear!

Waiting on osir coming back to me with a price for the plastic insert..... They have to mail their supplier.

Didn't have much faith in my vw dealer, who couldn't find the reflector inserts on his system! Not concerned about these they're pennies really and they'll be on the system somewhere.

Only other wrinkle is an mot is due and I need a new tyre as there is the smallest of bulges on one. So bang goes another £150! Not cheap this dubbin' is it?

The reflectors are a later addition and so may not appear on your dealer's system but their Parts Manager's phone call to MK will acquire you a pair - About £3 each IIRC.

Running any car, not just Dubs, is never cheap - And even more expensive if you frequent forums like this one!
