Is this normal?
« on: July 30, 2013, 10:05:47 am »
Fitted my new forge twintake last night, and took it out for a test run. Performance wise everything felt good and a slight improvement but I cant get my head round the noise it makes? Although it makes the noise I expected at points there's a rather strange whistle cant work out if something's wrong or its normal any ideas?

Another short clip where the whistle is more poignant, really strange noise like being a game show! haha

Unfortunately, that's just a K03 thing with an aftermarket CAI, some have it some don't.  Not just the Twintake that gets this.

Thanks for your reply, is there no way to dampen the whistle or cut it out?

When I had mine fitted to my GTI, I could only hear a slight whistle upon heavy acceleration. Could be a recirc valve-related issue? Also, make sure all your jubilee clips are 'done up' nice and tight.

Put the standard intake back on.  :happy2:

Seriously though, the reason that the aftermarket intake is so noisy is because it is designed purely for performance. The standard air box/filter is restrictive as it is a compromise. Most people don't like their cars to make weird noises so VW designed the intake to be quiet and of course cheap to make. The routing helps to baffle the noise but also restricts airflow.
The CAI has a big hollow pipe with effectively an open end, air passes through easily and so does sound! Think of it as a didgeridoo!

Most of the time I quite like my P-flow but there are the odd occasions I wish it wasn't so noisy. It's staying because of the performance benefits.

That noise it rediculous..... :signLOL:

Like like someone blowing on a bottle.

Does the twin take have the K04 tap on it?

Haha that's one solution! Just not sure if I've done something wrong its not so much the loudness or the sound of the air its that bottle blowing noise that richwig is kindly mocking  :sad1: going to go over all the clips tonight and see if I cant stop it somehow! have been looking at videos all day and none have sounded quite like mine so im hoping there's something to be done! thanks for all responses though guys really need some input!

Cheers, Ash.

I'm planning on fitting my Twintake this weekend. Hope I don't end up with that noise.

Would be interesting to hear if you manage to sort it.

Not sure if it would make a difference but are the canisters in the right way round?

Don't think its the KO4 one all seemed to fit perfectly, Couple of videos on YouTube sound very similar to mine but then some not so! I think I got the cones the right way with the cone facing outwards (Engine-Bay > Outside) -- If that makes sense lol still haven't got to the bottom of this!

I'm not sure myself Kalps, I think Robin explains it in his review thread. :happy2:
