DSG Question

Hi all

Finally got myself a GTi ED30  :jumping:picking her up saturday but i have a question regarding the DSG

When your driving and come to a set of traffic lights do you put it in A) Netural or B) Park? Heard that if you leave it in gear at a set of light's you can boil the oil in the gearbox is that true?  :confused:

I put it in nutural if I think ill be waiting over 30 seconds or so but never park,Its a pain when you forget though and go to pull off then notice ur in nutral them you need to apply the brake and select d or s again and try again.

So if longer then 30sec's put in nutral then can just use the paddles to change to 1st?

No if you put it into neutral you have to then put it back into drive.

I normally just press the brake at lights? Surely if I have to put it into neutral takes away the point of auto?

Leave it in D and hold on the foot brake. Long periods I would use N and apply the handbrake  :smiley:

Drive it like a manual, so when longer than 20/30 seconds stopped put it in neutral.

try not to roll in neutral.

If you know someone with VCDS near you do a DSG reset then it learns the way you drive from the get go and not the way the previous owner drove it.

Don't leave it in drive with the handbrake on - the footbrake reduces torque to the clutchplates to reduce wear.  It helps to remember it's not an automatic but an automated gearbox with two clutches.
Neutral = handbrake.
Drive = footbrake.

I generally put it in neutral whenever I'm stopped for any amount of time. You're wearing out the brakes faster and putting extra stress on the engine by leaving it in drive with your foot on the brake as the car is trying to go forward but you're stopping it.
Thats my view anyway!

Your fine to leave it in d with your footbrake on at the lights, its the 21st century these days so the car knows your stopped with the brakes on and releases the clutch or does some magic in there, when you let go of the brake you will feel about half a second pause then the clutches will kick in and it will start to edge you forward. If by any reason you want to stop and put the handbrake on you will have to put it in neurtal orelse it will try and move forward. Your brake pads wont wear out sat still at the lights  :happy2:
Say your at the lights in neutral with your handbrake on the procedure is press the footbrake put it in d, release the handbrake and lift your foot off the footbrake unless your doing a hill start then put it into d let go of the brake then release handbrake about half a second later.
You will get used to it soon but it took me about a month to get fully used to it and i like it more and more all the time, 98% of the time im in manual using the paddles. Ive drove a ferrari 360, aston martin, audi r8 and lamborghini gallardo and none of them systems where as nice as dsg

It's supposed to be human proof. D and foot on the brake unless stopping for extended periods or parking.
I bet the testing/abuse these systems took in development and final testing would make our collective hair stand on end! The only thing I do is give the box 'time to catch up' when maneuvering or parking, ie in and out of D and R.
