Suspicious email??
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:51:46 pm »
Hi guys this might be totally genuine or not but thought I'd fire this up here before doing more about it, I receive this email just now about my ad and I don't know wether it's legit or some form of scam?! Hoping it is legit!

Hi David

Spotted your ad for GTI on pistonheads

If still for sale, feel free to e-mail me the text of your ad and a pic (just best one), and I'll run it for you free of charge in the next issue of Volkswagen Driver magazine

No cost, no catch - I just have a few spare slots to fill in our classified ads pages before our next deadline...

(Don't forget to include price, and phone contacts etc., as this ad is in print and not just internet)

Hope this will be helpful to you

regards

What would be a scam anyway?
They've asked for pics and an ad.

Youre not parting with any cash so no problemo! Neil is sound as a pound.
Pistonheads is where I got scammed for £450. My own stupid fault really but Pistonheads accept's ads from any Tom, Dick (in my case!) or Harry without any references or checks. I replied to a 'Xenons For Sale' ad, sent the bloke £450 and that was that. Got the Police involved, scammer was known to them as I had got a name and address at least but he was already on remand for some other crime and I had no recourse.
Never send funds to a seller unless through PAYPAL or with a credit card and my advise is don't use Pistonheads for anything.
GLWTS.

Where you buy from does not matter... most people advertise on multiple sites. I have adverts up on 4 different sites at the minutes. Pistonheads is not one of them BUT the point being, if you use your common sense, ask for a picture with guys username and date on it... that's pretty much proof enough. Buy with cash or Paypal.

The site is irrelevant.

As said before - he will be completely genuine. Have been in contact with Neil before (he featured my old mkiv in VW Driver), and is a decent chap.

The site does matter.
If one can pay for anything with either PayPal or a credit card there is insurance if the seller defaults or the goods are faulty. With cash, there's no comeback.
Pistonheads may have changed its policy but by taking free ads and absolutely no details from some of its classified advertisers, one is more likely to come across the unscrupulous back street chancer who advertises either knock off or fictitious goods at unfeasably low prices. I spoke with the Advertising Manager at Pistonheads at length after my loss and he admitted the problem.
Stay away from anything that looks too good to be true and free ads on Pistonheads!

You can set up a fake Ebay account in a matter of minutes.

It's nothing to do with the WEBSITE you use and everything to do with the item and the research you put into the item.
With cash you have to generally go to the sellers house to actually buy the item - Ergo you have it infront of you, in the flesh - in which case if you then part with your money and there's something wrong with it, that's your fault.

Paying through PayPal is completely safe in terms of risk and this applies to any site..

Funniest thread ever. N00b to VW scene alert!  :signLOL: People dont advertise in Mags any more, so Neil is always looking at enterprising ways to try and get more content in the pages.

Neil is a top bloke, always has time for a chat and one of the nicest guys you would ever be able to chat Dubs with. If anyone seeks him out at a show, he is more than willing to talk to you.
