vredestein ultrac sessanta- problems
« on: August 02, 2013, 07:06:06 pm »
So I bought these as many of you recommended them. They are decent when roads are dry but the slightest bit of rain and the car goes all over the place, my budget tyres had more grip in the wet. Anyone else had similar experiences?

Do you have the tyres on the correct direction?

Ultrac Sessanta's are Assymetric tyres so the direction doesn't matter Steve.

I had them on my last vRS and thought they were a very good tyre. Pretty much on par with Mich PS3 for grip (although the PS3 had the slight edge and were quieter)

Have you got any tyre shine or anything on them? I never had any issue at all in the wet with them. When you say wet is it after a good downpour or just slight drizzle? Reason i ask is after a slight drizzle all the oil etc on the roads rises to the surface so it makes it worse than usual and needs a good downpour to shift it away or wait till it dries out again.

They can still be fitted the wrong way though. Ie. outside on the inside.

If these are fitted on back to front , will compromise the handling..

Easy mistake for the garage to make as if you look at them, it's looks as they should go the opposite way around. Worth checking the rotation arrows on the tyre wall afaik

I've ran with the Sessantas in all sorts of weathers over the last 2 years (4 sets infact!) and never once complained about wet grip. Infact they are one of the best tyres for wet grip out there.
I drive my cars hard (well I don't this GTI but my TDI I did) and never once did I have to question my confidence with them.

The inside edge is clearly marked saying "INSIDE".

Correctly fitted the long groove that goes circularly around the tyre is on the inside.
You can see correct fitment here.

They dont have rotation arrows... they should say OUTSIDE... on the outside!  :happy2:

Right folks I have had a look and the figment is correct. I only changed the front 2 tyres, the rear are still the old budget ones which makes me suspect that's the reason for the poor handling when wet. Thanks for all the advice.

When you change only two tyres on the same axle, you should put the new tyres at the rear on a fwd car.
Without traction power is nothing!

Agree. Did anyone see that driving program on Channel 5 where they compared worn and new tyres swapping front and back and then tested at low speed on a wet track? As always, loss of traction at the front end was easy enough to control but when the back end lost it, the car was all over the place and mostly spun off even at 30mph
