Does any body remember the advert from the 80.s where a golf and astra are waiting at traffic lights and the astra accelerates of leaving the golf behind,The caption says our product might not be the fastest in the world but it will last the longest.
Says it all really

I personally moved from an astra vxr to a mk5 gti (1 month ago). Both cars have their good points, but its hard to compare them as to me they are in two different classes.

To me the golf is an 'all rounder' where as the astra is designed to be sporty and aggressive.
Everytime I drove the astra it put a smile on my face, the sound, the performance ect. Now when I drive the golf there no excitement, but there is an overall feeling of enjoyment. It's a car that doesn't need to be pushed to be content.
Overall i think the golf is a better car, better build quality, more comfortable, but to be honest that's about it. It lacks the fun factor

No, it's standard engine wise at the moment. Planning a map in the future though.
Once mapped it will be running about the same power as the astra, and I imagine it will be a much better car then.

The new Focus ST is 265ps, S3 300ps and new type R going to be 300ps. The new GTI is 220... With an extra payment we can expect a whopping extra 10ps.. So why is it lagging behind and will its popularity decline as a result??

VW is not leaving it behind...but they do have one factor the others do not. What else within the others own line-up are their models competing with? Nothing, right?
If VW boosts the power output for the GTI...how will they ever sell the 'R'? I'd buy the GTI because it would be cheaper. They can't raise the price of a more powerful GTI and still compete with those other models as well.
Another reason may be(my conspiracy theory ;p), they know that many are getting remapped an upgraded...yes? That means many of the tuned cars will be rejected for warranty work when brought in to any VW shop. Huh, what if?...right? IDK ;p

You can still order a convertible one. Would be a very rare car if you got one.

I saw one in Rome at a dealer showroom behind a huge plate glass window......wanted to jump out and have it sent home in the States. My wife wouldn't allow it though... :sad1:
