Honest opinions please

Guys,
I am thinking of selling the beloved MK5 GT Sport as a change of job means I an only 12 miles from work and will do about 6K miles a year now and so am moving to a petrol....after 12 years being an oil burner fan 

The thing is, I am a little disenchanted with the whole "car ownership" thing and I am thinking of going the PCP route, so I need to sell my car privately and get the most for it, so I can leave a minimum deposit for a new car / PCP stylee and spend the rest clearing debts.

So, looking around I can't see an equivalent car to mine anywhere on Autotrader, so I placed my add here: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,70077.0.html
Using a baseline price for cars up for sale that are a lower spec to mine and have higher mileage.

My question is, am I being too ambitious with the price or not?
If there are no cars around in a similar spec / condition, how do you bench mark your asking price?

Personally think that's a little on the high side tbh. I've been looking at these cars as I need to change to a diesel as I'm moving out. I can get a good one for 7500.

In run of the mill cars, extras don't add value, only make it more desirable come sale time.

Yes you can get a DPF 170 for that price, but that is my point, how do you define a "good one" ?  I am not being picky, but the ones I see on the AutoTrader are not a patch on my car and yet they are asking £8900, there is even a base GT (No Xenons, no cruise, no dual zone climate) on there for over £9K
I would think a good one would also constitute a car that will not need:

A new set of injectors (£3000 bill)
A cam belt change (£300)
New tyres (cost £600)
A new Air Con compressor (£800 from VW)

Ok a few of these are consumable types, e.g. wear and tear (Tyres and cam belt) but it surely adds to the value proposition?

I even registered on "We buy any car" (and rip you off) to see what price they were offering and to be honest, I thought the £6500 was way too cruel an insult

Most people buying a diesel golf hatch won't care too much about xenons, dual climate etc. They just want a solid reliable car and that's how they've came up with the golf as an option.

The injectors are done free of charge by vw.

Cambelt and tyres are consumables which any good car should have replaced as and when required.

I don't think the fact that its had a new air con compressor is a selling point. People will likely just think that something's broke, so you had it replaced, simples!

You might be lucky and get somebody willing to pay a few hundred more than the going rate.

We buy an car will have offered you slightly more than book value for your car. You probably got a fright though!

I hope you've done all your calculations in regards to pcp. Sometimes they can work out very expensive over the time you have the car and you are tied in to a contract.

So...just because people are perhaps forced to turn to a diesel because of the miles they cover, you think that they won't care about Xenon lights, or nice alloys, or climate, or leather interior or cruise control?

Of course they do..

Cheers Dan,....it's one of those difficult things....your pride and joy you will always value higher than the market, but in real terms, when nothing is about in the same class as yours...you maybe have to stick to your own valuation?

Also agree about spec, having xenons now on my GTI I wouldn't buy a new car without them so would pay more for a car that had them. In fact as I may switch to an oil burner later in the year - an have been looking at prices to get an idea and astonished at how many mk6 GTD don't have xenons so picking the right one will be key

Applying the same to the mk5 as same problem - you have a desirable car!

Like most things people will pay for quality but it takes time to find that person,since we all want to grab a bargin!

Hold out if the car is as good as it looks on the photos.

Howerver,if you need the money drop the price and that person will come along sooner.

Finally, I've noticed the people selling cars on here seem to rate Autotrader for a quick sale.

Hi Leebo....I have had it up about a week or so now, and other than people wanting various parts of the car   I have not had too much interest in it, although I have only placed it in the For Sale thread on here, no where else yet... but the day is young and I am in no particular rush just yet.  

The car I was initially looking to get on a PCP was a 1.4 TSI Audi A3 Sportback - S Line
I will be going into the dealership this weekend (first free time for a while....jeeeez busy month or two) and checking out the options, hopefully that will cement the thought process and start the ball rolling in earnest.

And BrookesB...I can't agree more with your post I will not be buying any car without Xenon headlights....awesome technology and vital in the dark, wet winter months.

I'd be tempted to stick in on Autotrader mate as that's generally given me the best results in the last few cars I've sold.
Stick it up for the price you want and just see what sort of interest you get. If you're in no rush then that's a good position to be in as you don't have to consider silly offers!

The other thing that you could do is buy an independant warranty and then sell that with the car. I've had this on my last two cars and have transferred the remaining balances of the warranties to the new owners and both of them were really happy that it included some peace of mind.  It's a great selling point and for a couple of hundred quid, it may help you get the price that you want for the car.
As others have said, generally people who are looking to buy a diesel Golf won't pay extra for the higher spec. That's not to say that they don't actually care, it's more that they'll just consider it a bonus rather than something to actually pay more for.

As for the Audi, it's a nice car,I had one the other day (exact same model!) when my A6 was in for work.
