Buying Stage 2
« on: August 02, 2013, 10:04:20 pm »
Hello,

Looking at buying a GTi, it just so happens an ED30 with a stage 2 has come up.

I've always told myself never to buy a modded car, and I never have, I've always bought standard and modded them myself.

So the questions are:

It's never had a clutch, is bound to be on it's way out ? How much are we talking ?
Is stage 2 reliable ?
What sort of real world commuting MPG could i get ?
If I wanted to downgrade could I sell the miltek and put a standard system back on and then put the map back to stage 1 or even standard ?

Any other comments ?

To be honest, I don't need 300+ bhp for my commuting.

Not when you do 18k a year. Queue the 'get a deisel', NO.

Seriously though, any answer to my q's.

I do roughly 15k a year in my ed30 main reason I bought a low mileage example and on a work commute get about 33-39 mpg with a stage 1 map but soon as you hit the go pedal it drops vastly, I would never buy a modded car either but as it appears a lot of ed30 have been modded and put back to standard to sell it would appear.

I'm hoping for 33-39 yeah.

Currently get 35 from a full tank in my Type R so I'm expecting a slight drop but hopefully less revving ;)

It's currently not slipping but I don't want a shock if I bought it, put it back to stage 1 and then need a clutch too !

mine lasted less than a week when i went stg1 to stg 2+ - the oem ones are made of cheese so budget for a new one or dont buy the car and wait for a dsg one to come up

Just check the dmf if you're changing the clutch. Might be worth changing it anyway to avoid possible double labour.

I wouldn't go single mass either...will drive you mad.

I would say budget for a new clutch/flywheel and go for it. And no don't get a diesel . I used to do 20K commuting per year + my use. I currently get about 27-28mpg from stg 1 with a few extra bits (start/stop with a dual-carriageway blast). Used to get mid to late 30's on the longer commute. I once got 41.5 but that entailed keeping the revs under 2.5k and not exceeding 50 on the M42 (busy traffic and gantries on). I was intrigued and fancied the challenge - sooo boring!

Have you seen the number of "back to standard - for sale" threads on here. Chances are; if you buy a stock one, it will be a modded one that's had all the bits taken off! You can then buy all the bits and put them back on.

Hmm, knocking 1k off a car is going to be somewhat difficult to budget for the DMF and Clutch.

Maybe it's not a good idea and just look for stardard.

Could I claw back money by selling a Miltek and putting back to standard, or is it not worth the hassle ?

Thank Joe. I didn't take your advise and pussied out.

Buying at stage 2 on 80k with no clutch or dmf changed is bonkers. Never going to knock 1k off and then buying at 9k, who wants to then spend 1k on the car.
