Rear boot spoiler removal
« on: August 09, 2013, 06:19:22 pm »
So somehow whilst parking in a multi storey car park wifey broke the rear window on the gti. :jumping: :sad1:

Auto glass came out today but said they can't put the new rear glass in because of the high level rear spoiler.

Apparently I need to remove this, and then call them to return and they will then refit the glass.

Does anyone know how to remove it please?  The technician said its bonded on and will need prising off, but I can't believe VW wouldn't have used mechanical screws to hold it in place?

Any help appreciated as pregnant wifey is stressed enough and I need to get this fixed ASAP!!!! :notworthy:

Cheers

Remove the plastic cover inside the boot. There must be some sort of bolts holding it on.

Unfortunately the rear spoiler is stuck on to the tailgate so what the tech has told you is correct. Trying to remove it usually damages it and the some tailgate paintwork.  :sad1:

I am super disappointed at this news. Why would you glue this piece on?  I'm super disappointed with auto glass too for not knowing this.

It sounds to me that the most cost effective repair is a lid from the breakers!  :happy2: If glue is progress in car manufacturing, then I wish I'd kept my 1988 mk2 campaign. This is b*llocks. :stupid: Rant over.

Thanks muchly for the replies.

Yes it's definitely a badly thought out design by VW!

You will have to do well to be able to take it off without breaking it. Basically it's two blobs of silicon/adhesive one either end of the spoiler. Remove them by heating them up with a heat gun and cutting them with a knife while prising open a gap in the spoiler so you can do so. Then if you prise it open from the roof end of the car you will find its on clips I think it's about 4-6 gently flick these open with a screw driver and its off. Underneath is a plastic spoiler frame be careful not to break this when you remove it.

Pm me if you need anymore help I just took a gti spoiler off a boot lid to but on my car a few days ago.

Thanks for all responses on this one.

My summary is the rear spoiler not designed to come off. In the end I got a local body shop to remove. I got my glass fitted, and the the body shop refitted the spoiler by bonding it back in place.

A real PITA.

I hear this has been altered for mk 6 & 7 variants.

Cheers :congrats:
