Golf GTI - better than a BMW 5 series
« on: August 13, 2013, 08:28:14 pm »
Well recently I have been driving the new family car about- its a BMW 520D. After a couple of days driving it I felt like I was missing driving the GTI, the beamer just did not cut it in terms of driver enjoyment, manoeuvrability, handling, speed and pretty much everything else.

It made me realise what a great car the GTI actually is and why we have forums like this dedicated to it  :happy2:

Some Bmw's look good, but i really dont like them to drive!

They without a doubt dont match the quality of a VAG either!

I sold a 530i to get the Golf and couldn't agree more! Hated the BM, absolutely LOVE the Golf!  :happy2:

The problem is that it wasn't a 550i... ;)

I have to disagree, I went from an E46 M3 to the GTi and have to say the BMW is leagues ahead in terms of refinement, quality, handling, enjoyment and speed (obvioulsy!).

We also recently changed our X1 to a Passat and again the BMW was a much nicer drive.

To completely different type of cars a 5 series is a cruiser

but it would be like comparing the 1.4 golf to the m5. He's comparing the little 520d to the mighty GTI. If it was the 1.4 to the M5 it would be a different story? Like comparing a potato to a tomato? Hard to explain my point lol :(

Two completely different cars IMO

The golf is designed to be a 'fun' manoeuvrable car, where the bimmer is more of a cruiser.

If it wasn't for the insurance I would be driving a 525 now instead of my gti.

ive got an E60 530i as well as the GTi..

You cant really compare the two cars.. they're completely night and day and both have their pros and cons..

While the GTi is a complete hoot to attack any road, the comfort my grate on the driver/passenger after a while where the BM is a complete mileage muncher and wafts along the road without jarring your spine to bits..

We use the 5 series for everything baby related as the 3drs dont lend themselves very well to getting a car seat in and out..

I own a manual GTI and an E39 M5. Obv both very different but I have to say I still love driving the GTI. Quick, nimble and handles so well. Can't beat the sound of a V8 tho

Very valid and good points. The weird thing is that Joe public, including work colleagues, comment on the Beamer but don't say as much about the Gti.. Think a lot of people just see the brand and not what the car can do. Gti all the way for me.
