High speed Wheel Wobble

Hi Guys,

As some of you will know i recently got some new BBS wheels with Falken Tyres for my car. Since fitting them i have noticed at high speed (70+) i get some fairly obvious wobble through the steering wheel.

I initilally thought it must be the balance so i had all 4 wheels checked but that was fine, however the technician said that the tyres werent running smoothy on the surface that is in contact with the road if that makes sense (i.e. the tyre isnt perfectly round). e suggested this could just be because they were on the bottom of the palette or something.

Would this still be a possible reason for the wobble or can anyone think of another reason? I guess if the tyres are faulty I could claim under a manufacturer's warranty, but before looking at that route i wanted to see if anyone could think of another reason for the wobble as the balance is ok,

Tracking or a knackered bush maybe? Especially if you've knocked something out of line with a pot hole/speed bump etc but if its only started when you changed the wheels then I'd be taking them back to where they came from, getting him to replace the tires that HE said weren't right and let him take it up with Falken.

It was a different place that i had them checked at (with an excellent reputation) as the wheels were Mailed from PW motorsport, i might give Phil there a call tomorrow to discuss, just might be a pain to get them changed as its mail order,

definitely only started when i changed the wheels

Your tried tracking the wheels as Boothmeister said ?

I had same problem.. when i got my new Oettinger wheels, they shuddered the steering wheel when i drove over 70+mph...

Tracking at kwik fit solved the problem for me

Might be worth a try I guess, just seems odd that there was no issue before, but then i guess they might track differently due to the increase in size from my 17's,

Get the wheel Balancing re-checked by independant wheel centre.
Had same issue after my alloys, after 70 it would wobble and even out later on.
 
Cost you a couple of quid to have it checked out.

Spigot rings make the centre bore of the wheel match up with the spigot on the wheel hub. The weight of the car should be supported on the spigot, if it is not the weight is supported by the wheel bolts and will cause vibration at high speeds. It is also very dangerous and under spirited driving or heavy breaking the load on the wheel bolts can result in the bolts snapping and obviously the wheel will come off

Thanks Cooper, what am i looking for to see if they are not right? is it the bit tat sticks out from the hub that te wheel sits on? would it be worn or something if at fault?

Deformed tyre casings ? Falken tyres are the most expensive tyres on the market, so maybe they keep there costs down by using a lesser spec casing ... ??!!??

Just a thought.

Failing that, then spigot rings might be a fraction out ?

Right, I took one of the front wheels off to have a look, can you confirm for me that there are no Spigot rings in these two shots? I think it should be on the wheel side? If they are indeed missing would it be fair to say they should have been supplied with the wheels or is it up to the owner to get them? Will all good Alloy wheel dealers have them and does anyone know the size i will need?

To see if the spigot size is correct, when you have the car jacked up remove all of the wheel bolts and the wheel should still stay on the centre of the hub with all of the bolt holes lined up, if the wheel drops it means your spigot size is incorrect

Edit: Looking at those pics the centre bore on the wheel looks like it should be about right, you can measure it yourself, the diameter of the hole should 57.1mm for VAG application, if this is the size of the hole then your problem lies elsewhere
