DSG gentle judder
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:47:40 pm »
Hi All,

My 06 GTI DSG will sometime give a gentle 'judder' when coming to a stop, almost like its stopping itself from stalling.  Also, when switching from N into D, there is a small, gentle judder.

Iv searched the forums but other posts mention, clunking, jerking, noises.  I have none of this.

Is this normal?

Thanks guys

Is this when the car is going into 2nd gear?

Mine can be a bit slow or clunky sometimes in selecting 2nd gear when coming up to junctions or just before a bend if i have let off the accelerator/coasting and does make a click noise but i think thats just the clutches engaging/disengaging and it isnt very loud, i only hear it when ive the radio off and windows down.

I find that its most noticeable in manual mode. The best way around it is to give some acceleration in 3rd before selecting 2nd and the DSG will think ok you want to go faster so it will have 2nd waiting.

If u let off the throttle it thinks ok you want slower/more economy and will have 4th waiting rather than 2nd so it becomes confused and takes just that bit longer to find the gear you want, if you give it some acceleration and go for 2nd then it will be alot quicker/smoother. :happy2:

I had this exact issue with mine, not jerky feeling but could hear 2nd gear enagaging when downshifting, later on it happened in 4th aswell so got it looked at. Turned out to be the clutch packs, just had them replaced and the noise has gone completely.

I would get it scanned with VCDS before condemning the transmission, It could be a low rev misfire....

damn how much did that cost Mandy? i may get it looked at then as i only have 3 months warranty on the car :scared:

Also Mandy do you have the DSG software as ive only noticed this start to happen since i had the revo stage 1 and dsg map about 2 weeks ago, everything else is fine all other gears etc are smooth and super quick just that 2nd gear selection when rolling to a T junction then accelerating again and the click when it drops from 3rd to 2nd

If your car still has warranty, get it checked before it runs out! I'm not sure what the total cost would be as they changed my mechs unit first which didn't cure it, then changed clutch packs but didn't charge me for the labour. The clutch packs alone were around £277 + VAT.

I did have Revo stage 2 map and Revo DSG stage 1 map, had it mapped over 2 yrs ago and never had any issues with gearbox. I don't believe the map was the direct cause, but maybe the increased torque etc might've help kill it in the end? Even with the noisy gears on downshift, the car was still smooth to drive.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I think my situation is a bit different yours.  Mine is when coming to a stop, so gears 6 down to 2 all fine and silky smooth, but its the actual change from 2 to 1 where i feel the judder.  Not everytime, just occasionally.

Think im paranoid!

Actually hasnt happened since I posted yesturday, and was stuck on the M42 for 2 hours in stop start traffic and it didnt do it once then either.

If it continues ill appeal to anyone with VCDS in Tamworth and see if they can scan it for me for some beer tokens.

Been speaking to a few people about this that have owned DSG cars and they have all mentioned the 2nd gear delay and the odd click from the gearbox on downshifts so been told not to worry about it.

I took mine for a good drive there for about an hour with all sorts of driving in the D,M and S modes and conclude that in D and S the box is silent and smooth. In manual the downshift to 2nd does the click sometimes but it only audible with the radio off and windows up, it didnt do the delay and doesnt judder either.

I have changed my driving style and if im gonna need 2nd ill give a little throttle in 3rd then go for 2nd and it happens instantly without any click so the only time this happens is when the car is coasting and gets confused thinking does he want 4th or 2nd. So theres no issue with the gearbox and got my mate who's a VW mechanic to drive it and he didnt see a problem, he says the boxes are pretty bullet proof and if anything the only problems hes seen are software related and usually sorted with a reflash.

Gianni_uk have you tried giving it some throttle before going down the gear

You mention about the dsg gets confused when coasting, and this makes sense because it only happens when coming to a stop.  going up the box, or even down from 3 to 2 is fine and smooth.

Other than that no issues so this has eased my paranoia!

Hi,

I get the clunk when dropping to second gear. Overall Gear change is very smooth and i am happy with my DSG. Make sure the DSG is serviced every 40K miles!

Was up with my mechanic and revo dealer lastnight and he took it a good run, heard the click and said its normal , just the boxdoing its thing. Provided its not doin anything crazy like jumping about gears on its own or moving from D to N etc by itself then theres nothing to worry about.

We put the factory DSG settings back on and tried it and the noise was still there so i got the revo dsg back on :happy2:
