Oil consumption?
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:06:45 pm »
Went out to the car today and noticed the oil level warning on the MFC.
Checked the dpistick and found the level to be just enough to tickle the end of it! :surprised:
I checked it a couple of weeks ago and it was about two thirds below the max mark.
I had to put in about a litre and a half of Castrol edge 5/30 to top it up.
Just wondering ir this is normal oil consumption or should I be worried? :scared:

Loads of threads on here about oil consumption.

The manual states a quart in 600 miles can be considered normal...

You need to fill it up to max and see how many miles you do by the time you reach the minimum oil level mark on the dipstick (Approx 1l top up to reach max) to get an idea how much oil you have used.

It doesn't mean your engine has a problem but it was one reason I sold my MK5.

Mine used to use 1 litre every 2000 miles religiously. VW engines do generally use a bit of oil, it helps to lubricate the top of the cylinder so isn't really a bad thing  :happy2:

Just check it regularly to keep it within the max- min markers

Consider it a good issue as it promts you to look under the lid - whilst in there your bound too visual check a few other items as well.

I think most MKV Gti's use oil!

I top up about a litre a month. Drive around 1500 miles. Thought it might be something to worry about but turns out a lot of people experience the same. Just keep a few litres spare in the boot, saves u a trip at inconvenient times. When my oil warning came up i had to by a litre from a shell service station for £22! So iv learnt my lesson now and keep a spare bottle in the boot.

I remember I started a similar thread a couple of years ago, I thought I had a leak. I then took it to VW who said there was no leak and all was within normal range. VW and Audi engines seems to use a lot more oil than many other brands for whatever reason, particularly when the engines get a bit older.

Also the oil warning light sometimes only comes on when there is pretty much no oil left so I would make sure you are regularly checking it yourself and always keep oil spare!

As above it can be normal but a lot don't use any oil.  I've just sold my gti after 8 years and in that time and 56k it used half a litre for the first 10k and then never used a drop again

that's odd, because mine has settled down with age. used to use 1L every 1000-2000mi when i first bought it 2nd hand (21k miles), now it hardly uses any between services (65k miles)

As I found out!

Just thought it was odd as I have the car serviced regularly and it's not done this before, between services.
Must be a quirk of the modern VW engine as the old PB and PG blocks in my Corrado G60 and MK2 GTI supped oil like an incontinent old lady at a tea party.
