Thought about an Edition 30!

I have had my gti for a year and a half and was thinking about moving to an Edition 30. Went and had a look at one in Peterborough 5 door in white with 65k on the clock, 2008 model with mfsw and parking sensors, no other obvious upgrades, radio was a basic vw one, up for £11995.

Condition was ok but me being a perfectionist my 2005 tornado red is in better condition. My gti has 74k on the clock so not a great difference in mileage. Both have full service history.

So I asked how much to part ex, dealer would not move on price of Eddie £11995, offered me £5500 for mine, I know I would prob get about £6500 for mine if I sold privately (hopefully).

So the question is, is an editon 30 3 years younger than mine really worth £6495 more than my 2005 gti!

Personally I don't think so, with that amount of money I could run my current car for a few more years and spend quite alot on remaps, upgrades etc.

Also I have noticed that mk6 gti prices are getting pretty close to top end Eddie prices.

I know the Eddie is a limited addition but not worth the extra for me at the moment.

IMHO it's not worth over double the price of yours.

If you wanted the Eddie look, you could do a bit of colour coding on yours and do a few bolt-ons if you want the extra power. The ed30 is expensive for what you actually get (bigger turbo a few bits of red stitching etc) over a standard GTI, but i guess your paying for the exclusivity more than anything.

If I was in that position, i'd spend a few £'s in improving yours or spend the extra on a MK6 GTI which then at least your getting a newer model with an improved engine (no cam follower issues).

I would think that £5,500 trade offer on an 05 GTI with 74k was pretty good though.
You are right though the price to change is a big jump.

an improved engine (no cam follower issues).

There is a nasty timing chain tensioner issue with the EA888. It's a much more expensive fix than a cam follower.

IMO don't spend £6495 to upgrade. Save for a Mk6 R.

I wouldn't for £6.5k either - having said that you can pick up a nice Eddie for £9-9.5k, so makes it £2.5-3k change which is a lot more appealing.

I love my K04 but even I would say the increase is far too much of a leap.

There are other options though.
How about a kit to upgrade the turbo on your existing GTI to a K04 for £2.1k (example) :

You would be able to pick up the style tweaks as well, save a fortune and you know you the condition meets your standards!

It's a great car, prices are getting to an affordable level. Very few issues with them seemingly - they use a modified EA113 from the Mk5 GTI.

I think a quick trip to r tech, stage 1 remap, bcs exhaust system along with my forge twin take will suffice while I ponder a mk6 golf r!

At least the engine is tried and tested, seen one for 19k, so yes getting affordable, liking it in blue or white! Would think a re map would take it to 300bhp ?

I think Stage 1 map brings them to 310bhp. The stock clutch isn't great apparently if you buy a manual and there's a good chance of slip with a stage 1 map.

So into s3 territory! Think I would like a dsg as not had one before but have used it in a r32 and liked it!
