The one's installed are standard LED's and have added a resistor to get around the bulb check on the sidelights.

The puddle lights don't have a bulb check that switches them off or shows the dash bulb out message in the same way so don't require the resistor (but do still show a bulb out warning in fault codes).

I would like to see the results with these bulbs are the first SMD type LED's I tried weren't very bright

i would have said SMDs werent really the best solution for the sidelights.

SMDs (although smaller ones) are used to light up your phone screen, and your dash and highline.

The type with four Leds in the 501 shaped plug with a resistor are probably the best bet

comparison to old mtec light (left)

both new led lights

....

So, you guys with the aftermarket sidelights - When do you drive with just sidelights?

Do you use them as Daylight Running Lights?

I don't have aftermarket sidelights but I drive around with my sidelights on as DRLs.

....OEM sidelights will be ineffective as DRL's but the LED sidelights would be more effective but I don't know if they would meet the forthcoming legal requirements - Doubtful unless you switch them differently and their candella strength may not fall within the legal range - I don't know.

Either way, I expect that most people here simply want these LED sidelights just for eye-candy.

Either way, I expect that most people here simply want these LED sidelights just for eye-candy.

To the contrary, OEM sidelights are used (legally) as DRLs in a number of countries including the US/NorAm and Scandinavia. The reason LEDs are stipulated for the forthcoming EU legislation (on new vehicles) in 2011 is so that certain countries which did not want to have mandatory DRLs - the UK - will accept their introduction.
Certain lower-spec Audis sold today without the spiff LED DRLs use their normal sidelights as DRL as well.

As to that second point, I too think a large part of it is the eye-candy thing.

The MK6 uses sidelights as DRL's, as do some of the 'lower spec' Audi A3's and 4's.

....As always

I'm saying that whether oem sidelights become legal or not in the UK as DRL's, I'm doubtful they would meet some other EC country rules. But more importantly than the rules, they simply don't measure up to the strength and hence effectiveness on the road as dedicated DRL's such as on Audi's (and my Hella DRL's).

I think that LED sidelights are a great idea though - I personally just don't need them as I very rarely use just sidelights as I have auto-switching Hella's.
