Massive wheel wobble!
« on: August 28, 2013, 04:05:00 pm »
Hi guys today on my way home from work I was on the motorway and accelerated. Then out of nowhere my steering started to wobble violently to the point I had to slow down and pull onto the hard shoulder.
The wobble continued until I stopped.

Had a quick look round the car for anything obvious. Nothing.

So headed off down the hard shoulder slowly so I  could exit. The wobble had gone. Slowly built up speed and still no wobble, steering feels quite stable.

What could this be? I have also notice a clicking sometimes from the front when I am driving and thought it may be the CV joints but the gaitors are not torn and I only had them changed 18 months ago.

Any input would be appreciated as I'm scared to drive it anywhere!

Are your wheel bolts correctly torqued?
Without traction power is nothing!

Yeah I have checked that and checked the condition of the spigot rings and everything seems fine. Driveshaft feels solid and track rod.
I'm stumped.

The only thing I am aware of that is wrong with my car is the front suspension top mounts are severely worn and they are getting replaced along with the groove bearings on Monday.
Could this cause the wheel wobble I got??

Get the wheels re-balanced.

The wheels are only 6 months old. I've checked for evidence of missing balance weights as well but they are all there.
The way the wheels wobbled I don't think would be because they are out of balance it was quite severe up until the car actually stopped

Although the only way to describe it was as if it was out of balance x50

Put the front on the back a see if that cures it - twisted tyre comes to mind though!

Is it possible that the top mount has twisted so much that he wheels at the front have toed in a small amount causing the tyres to drag??? I might be talking crap but if you get the top mounts sorted at least you can count that out.
