Dodds GT 170 Build - Going, going, going...
« on: August 31, 2013, 12:24:00 pm »
Ok so after 6 months out of a VW I came to my sense and picked up another mk5 in the form of a 170 GT TDi as below. It's a '56' Tornado Red more door effort. Not many extras on it, an armrest is about the height of it. It has the regular charcoal GT interior with a measly RCD300. Although the car has 100k on the clock it has a full service history, pulls incredibly strong (possible existing remap as it feels a heck of a lot quicker than my previous 180+ bhp Golf!) and it's had the all important recall for injectors. Bodywork is in fantastic nick. It's been treated to Autoglym LifeShine at some point so it is a really deep red.

I have a few plans so far (had the car 2 days). Will be looking to put colour-coded rear valance and side skirts on soon, along with colour-coding the front valance and adding the GTI splitter (in the post).

I'd love a set of 18" TD Pro 1.2's in silver sometime in the future and would like to remap it and get rid of the DPF.

Will let the pics do the talking:

I may have visited TPS this morning...

So, first mini mod: Polo 6R aerial

Old aerial before, was perished and not that great reception. Changed to...

Next mini mod is the R-Line grilles:

Apologies for the filth on the car. Off to wash it now!

Future plans for the front are the Black GTI grille with red pinstripe (matches the car) but no GTI badge.

I already own an armrest MDI but this car doesn't come with the DIN slot, just a storage hole. I'd like to end up with a RCD510 (again) and the MDI in the armrest or glovebox if it has to. Cruise control and a GTI flat bottom SW is high up on my list too. ;-)

Look forward to seeing how this progresses. I do think the centre of the front grill needs to be gloss black though. Just my opinion  :happy2:

As above I'm looking to fit the GTI front in due time. Keeping the lower three 'slatted' grilles though. Taking inspiration from the Golf Speed Edition but the opposite.

Thursday: bought Golf GT 170
Bought GTI splitter from member on here.
Friday: visited TPS Edinburgh
Saturday: collect a pile of parts from TPS (and fit a couple of them)
Sunday: bought Thule roof bars (from member here)
Bought a Ross-Tech Micro CAN cable from eBay.

Keenly awaiting the postman all next week.

TPS order was for R-Line front lower grilles, GTI rear valance, side skirts and fitting adapters/screws, etc and a Polo short aerial. Pics are starting to go into my build thread. Can't wait for some colour coding and fitting.  :jumpmove:

I'm loving the Tornado Red on mine, makes a change from the blue or silver I've had on almost all my previous cars (last Golf was an exception in Sage Green).

Cheers Marko. I'd love the Edition 30 front splitter, a bit pricey though. I'm going for the colour coded GTI valance for now (next month or so) and cc'd GTI rear & skirts. Can't wait!

Keenly hunting for a good priced RCD510 too. My last one I bagged for £180 on eBay!

Chance browse on eBay found me a RCD510 with 15 mins to go and no bids...

...wait and see.

Will probably need a new CAN gateway as my car is a Sept 2006 model. Can anybody remind me what part number of CAN gateway is fine (is it anything past revision 'L'?)

It's dangerous being the owner of a second standard mk5 Golf (whilst being a member on here). :scared: All the info/part number gathering, idea finding/copying, trials, etc that took me over a year to mod my previous Golf is all just hanging over my new car's head. I kept a record of everything I done to my last car so have every part number and detail in the book.

After 5 days of ownership (of a car I said I'd keep fairly standard...) I now have the following plans for parts mostly already bought or to be obtained:

Outside/Bodywork-
Colour coded front valance with unpainted GTI splitter
Colour coded GTI sideskirts
Half Colour Coded GTI rear Valance
GTI Headlights
R-Line Front Fog Grilles
GTI Front Top Grille
Standard GT lower centre grille
Polo 6R Aerial
Thule Roof Bars (when required)

Interior-
RCD510 Stereo
Latest Revision CAN Gateway
Armrest MDI with iPod interface
GTI Flat bottom Steering Wheel
Cruise Control

...in the future...

Engine/Wheels/Brakes/Exhaust-
Remove DPF and fit delete pipe (maybe full downpipe)
Remap to suit DPF delete
Braided Brake Lines front and Rear

I'll update here as and when parts are acquired/turn up in the post/are fitted.  :happy2:

Looks good fella!

Colour coded and some wheels, she'll look the business. Silver TD 1.2's would look great IMO.

^^^^ images below of Silver TD Pro Race 1.2's without the lip writing, exactly the same as VWR wheels in size and spec IIRC (could be VWR wheels now I think about it, just resprayed as they have VW centre caps  ).

Dodds, if this is spamming up your thread, let me know and I'll remove this post.  :happy2:

Exactly what I am aiming to do with my car! I'm keeping my eyes out for an Ed30 front splitter at the min too.

Any info where you found the photos? Any more of them, i.e. the whole car? I think the VW centre caps my just be stuck on top of the original caps (see last picture).

^^^^ Never saw a photo of the whole car. I cant remember where the photos are from, sorry. Found them on the interweb and they were in my Photobucket.  I was going for Silver TD's myself before I bought my current wheels, they look the nuts IMO.

So my VCDS Cable Arrived today. Along with fiddling with all the settings and getting it all 'just so' I found out I have a 21 byte highend CECM.  :jumpmove: All that's missing from having a 30 byte one would be cornering fog lights (that I would use anyway!).

However I found a couple of odd faults. Can anybody help me out here? I'll be installing a RCD510 over the weekend so can get in to investigate the antenna issue.

Luckily I already have a better CAN gateway in the post as my old 1K0 907 530 H wouldn't cut the mustard with a 2nd gen radio.
