Not low, standard height atm, car is completely standard currently but will be lowered of course.

Still in a massive dilemma as to what to do with these wheels, they are currently sat boxed up in my hallway, cant even open them to look at them in case I have to send them back :(

unless you into the vdub ed38 scene and plan to slam the car and have it at shows etc, i really really would not bother with wider rears. IMO it looks s*** and will not do anything for the dynamics of the car. Why did you want wider rears in the first place?

on an unlowered car they will probably fit (as will 8.5j et35) all round but will just look terrible (again IMO)

I'd send them back and source some 8j et50 or similar.

Look at my build thread to see how mine sit...

i have et 35's on fk coilovers.

I ended up getting 215 35 18's, even will arch mod, it wasn't enough.
The new tyres (falken fk452) are not as harsh a ride as i feared.

I wouldn't go wider than 8" with 225/40R18 tyres with ET45 on front if lowering

I wouldn't go wider than 8" with 225/40R18 tyres with ET38 on Rear if lowering

You can go much further than that Dom.

You can run 9" et 41 quite happily with 215/35 tyres , every Bentley wheel is run like this. Often with little to no rubbing.

I wouldn't go higher (having done it...) than that, or equivalent around 8.5 et 40 front with a 205/40 or a 215/35 tyre.

At the rear you can go much wider and lower offset, plus you also have factory adjustable camber up to 4 degrees.
You can run a 9.5 et 35 with a 225/40 quite happily without rubbing at all.

9.5 et45 might catch on the inside no?

Why do you want wider rear wheels anyway.. It will look crap. On an m3 or a 911 fair enough but this is a golf!

8j et50 on mine and i think thats about the perfect fitment on a golf.

Might look crap to you, but to other people the wider rear looks much more purposeful.

I ran et 56 front et 36 rear on a 7.5 for 2 years on my old TDI and it looked far better and handled very well, if anything it was more stable on the back end due to the wider track.

9.5 et 45 is fine on the rear.

So, I too am about to order some wheels but really can't get my head around offsets!!!!

Would I be ok with 8x19 et 40 on the front and 9x19 et 40 on the rear.

I know everyone has different opinions but I want some that fill the arches nicely without catching, and I really don't want to be rolling them either.

TIA

I'm running the same spec wheels as this!
Fronts 18x8.5 et 35 and rears 9.5 et 35
I havnt had to roll my arches atall, I just added some camber as I'm on air and wanted to dial the fitment!
When you lower it, depending if your going with coilovers, the lower you go the rears start to camber themselves
But if the natural camber isn't enough, it's really simple to camber them! If you can't do it, a garage can do it in no time for a pretty low cost :)
Also I'm running 205/40/18 and 215/40/18 :)
Hope this helps

That fitment and size you have nothing to worry about have seen on a mk5 et 20 wheels on a 9.5 rear and only just needed rolling you should be sitting with pretty good fitment with those wheels.... If you like the VDUB ( hate that fraise) look.

Did some googling...

Merc alphards come in at that fitment and size this is how they sit with no spacers..

alphards are 9.5 et40 so will tuck 5mm more than the super secret wheels he wont tell anybody about.
If your prepared to use max camber then you'll have no problems with the wheels  :happy2:
