DVLA - Reporting Untaxed Vehicles Via Website?
« on: September 07, 2013, 05:46:04 pm »
Hi All, I would like to know if the DVLA act when reporting a Vehicle on their website and what their procedures are.

I have two neighbours in my Cul de Sac. One has a car thats has been sitting in one of the spaces for several months, another neighbour has a car thats been SORN. Just a couple of questions..

1. Can DVLA act on vehicles that have been SORN while being parked up in Cul de Sacs? As I understand it that Cul de Sacs are not a driveway and not a private road as its maintained by the council - as my one is.

2. Once reported, what do the DVLA do exactly? Do they come round in vans and clamp the vehicles in question and fine the owner or do they send letters to the owner fining them?

I used to have a friend that bought cars (crappy Fiesta's), fixed them up and sold them on (In some cases swapped engines that had died). He claimed it was a legit business but used to leave them outside his house until they sold, in some cases with no tax!

One day the council clamped about 4 of them and requested he pay fines to release them. I think he also had to tax them so had to get insurance as well even if he had private land to move them to. If not paid, he would have had them removed and disposed of.

I think one of his neighbours might have reported him. I know if I lived next door I would have been pretty P1553d as the parking was horrendous before and it was about 30m from a school!

So yes, if the council deem it to be public land then they might act for you.  :happy2:

I don't know who reported it. He was the offender.

Yes they do. I reported a car that had ran out of tax, and had been sat for about 6 months and covered in 6 months of bird sh*t. They came and towed it!

So we're looking at a two week time span once reported?

I am in a simular situation.

There has been a car parked on our road for the past 9-10 months which is owned by a disabled neighbour who no longer drives. The car is SORN, not taxed and i suspect not insured either but it is still parked on the road. The car is a 1999 Ford Fiesta auto in pretty bad condition yet the owner is trying to sell it for £3k.

I get on fairly well with my neighbour but can not overlook the fact his car is completely illegal yet still parked on the road.

.
SORN is only legal if the SORN'd vehicle is parked/stored on PRIVATE land, not on any public highway, cul-de-sac, or similar.

If a car is parked on any public highway it must be road-taxed and insured.

That's my understanding of the law.

Up where my mum lives they had the same issue. Over seven cars with no tax on them sat at the end of the cul-de-sac and one day the council came, took half of them, clamped the others and within two days the road was free again.

The council will act if it is a nuisance or a sorned car, or both!

You also have to SORN it each year iirc.

It might be worth telling him that someone came around enquiring about the car in respect to getting it removed, and it might be in his best interest to either place it on some Private land or sell it for what he can get for it; rather than them taking it away to be crushed and having no money for it.

The website does work....slowly.

I personally, speak to your local police officer or better your local PCSO, they will deal with it! They do a little form and put a sticker on the car, that gets sent to the DVLA and the DVLA do something with it if there is an offence ie: fine or clamp if no response.

I had the police at my door (someone had parked across my dropped kerb, inconsiderate f*ckers) and they didn't seem overly bothered when I pointed out the untaxed / uninsured car.

Cos can't ticket for it unless someone's there with it, have to do the DVLA form.....that's why pcso's are better as they're to do it as its one of their few powers. Tbh, normal response cops... Unless your driving, probably won't even know what form it!!
