Getting the sack?
« on: September 09, 2013, 05:28:31 pm »
Not me.

I'm sacking 2 members of staff tomorrow and (surprisingly my wife would say) I've never had to do this before. Genuinely not looking forward to it.

Both are decent people but their quantity and, more importantly, their quality of work is below what I and my employers expect. All their previous appraisals have been leading to this, so may not be a surprise but I still feel sh*t doing it.

Any advice on the best way to approach this?

Just lay out the facts and keep it short.

Must feel a very difficult position to be in.

I would keep it polite and simple, explain there previous appraisal results, current performance and quality, the lengths you have gone to, to support and improve their work, this has not happened and the company are now left with the decision to ask them to leave or something to that effect.

All the best with tomorrow.   :happy2:

^^^^ Cheers.

That's the approach I'm taking (or planing on taking).

Just lay out the facts and keep it short.

Probably for the best as I waffle away at the best of times, getting sidetracked is a specialty of mine (I'm told).

^^^^ They'd better not. That or begging for their jobs would involve a slap, only right and proper.

I wouldn't swap, nasty thing to have to do, especially if they don't recognise that it's 'The business' dismissing them rather than you personally  :stupid:
I've watched a good mate and colleague go through a few disciplinaries (all self inflicted, unfortunately) and it doesn't look fun. Lots of meetings, letters and layercake of bull or so it seems...

Hope it goes pretty much to your plan  :happy2:

^^^^ Thanks.

There were lots of meetings, letters/emails to and fro blah blah blah and several conversations with legal peeps, can't just sack anyone nowadays. EVERYTHING has to be in writing with a long clear chain of evidence documenting the path taken etc.

My bosses are petrified about being sued for unfair dismissal, being taken to a tribunal or other things, they'd rather "better the devil we know" than "all the fuss" but its my decision so its up to me to deal with this.

My colleague has just been through a stint of discplinary's at work & has narrowly avoided the sack.

Horrible position but alike the people you talk of he is a decent bloke at heart and understands his wrong doings.

Hopefully the two chaps you have to dismiss will understand your position.

good luck bud!

:drinking: <--- a couple of them waiting in the fridge for you tomorow evening will also help!  :happy2:

It's a business and requires all parties to do their share or you'll all be out of a job!

Just box clever that's your job - they've got too go or it's the slippery slope - sleepless night for you and all that!

Never easy but if you've done it correctly they've had their chances.

Finally, when they leave your office  :pomppomp: round couple times!
